Current Affairs The Labour Party

I take no joy in the notion that poor misguided Labour supporters across the North will vote for a Tory Brexit having been conned and lied to. Some will lose jobs, homes and prospects for a generation. How on earth isn't that a very sad state of affairs?

They wont as was the case at the last election. In 'vote leave' Peterborough the Labour party won the by-election, an astounding victory. a Johnson led Tory party will get tonked at the next election.

Well a vast majority of experts think they will. But you of course believe in unicorns so you're never going to agree!

A vast majority of experts said we would have had emergency budgets and lost 1million jobs already, but I of course believe in my country.......

And the vast majority of 'experts' said May would wipe out a Corbyn led Labour party. Who's the person still leading their party?

But we havent left yet! An economy propped up by emergency measures. If we leave with No Deal it will tank...

....but then I'm sure you'll blame the rest of us for not crossing our fingers and closing our eyes tight enough.

If Pete had his way Britain would best be described as Dickensian, but having said that you could apply that description now.
We have zero hours like the bad old days on the docks, large numbers of people sleeping rough on the streets, inadequate medical care, education stripped to the bone, and a lack of affordable housing. We are constantly informed of the record levels of employment but this is because we effectively have three people doing one job and as a consequence are under employed hence the rise in "employed" people using food banks.
Maybe using the term Dickensian is wrong, maybe it's worse than that.

I am reasonably optimistic this will not happen to any significant degree, Charlie.

A guy from Liverpool called Liam phoned in to LBC yesterday afternoon, on the Sheila Fogarty programme.

Sheila and most the callers had been stating how concerned they were with the message Johnson was sending out by appointing such a motley collection of right wing nutters to his Cabinet.

Liam came on and asked why anyone was surprised at this.....he said that is the type of Cabinet we should have had in the aftermath of the Referendum and it was what we needed to ensure Brexit happened.

He declared himself an unreconstructed Brexiter.

He was then asked how he saw voting going in the North when the GE comes.....will Labour Leave voters defect to Tory in order to get Brexit “over the line”.

His answer?

An emphatic NO.

He must be in the Wavertree constituency because he said his MP was that Berger woman and that she had a thumping 20,000 majority last time and that there was no way even Leave voters in Wavertree were going to vote Tory.

Including himself.....Liam said he wants Brexit but not at the price expected to be paid by Johnson’s well heeled fanatics.

He will be voting Labour, as per.

Now, on this thread the other day I addressed the conundrum that Labour Leavers are going to face come the Election....especially oop North.

Is Brexit so important to them that they would rather vote in this crowd of cutters and slashers whom are going to double down on austerity to make their Kamikaze idea of no deal Brexit work?

The financial threat to their livelihood in the here and now and the future prospects of their children under this regime will be far more important to them than unicorns gambolling in sunlit uplands IMO.

They now see the face of Brexitannia sitting there smugly on the Government front benches.

And I am willing to bet they don’t like it :pint2:

Indeed.....it is an insult to a great social reformer and a mighty wordsmith.

“Dystopian” is how I would describe it.

The future was never supposed to look like this in Dickens’s mind.

I wonder what his thoughts would be if he were still around today?
He would probably recognize the same social injustices but with a more openly corrupt political class, dystopian could imply that there is a certain level of unreality to our society when in fact the realities of what is taking place are all too real.
My biggest fear is that if Boris should win the next General Election we can kiss goodbye to the NHS as we know it and care for the elderly and disabled will become a thing of the past.
Appointments such as Priti Patel should be ringing alarm bells after her treasonous behaviour with a foreign government whom shall remain nameless due to not wanting to be accused of being anti-semitic.
