You should be made to read The Condition of the Working-Class in England and then write out 100 times "I will not post daftness on GOT".

It’s in relation to their race. Working class people have very much been oppressed in the west but for reasons other than their race. I should have been clearer on my point

There is. I don’t think it’s worth being offended about though as I can understand the point he was trying to make and I don’t think he’s a racist person.

But these days people like to be offended by as much as possible.
Pointing out the relation of race to society and the power dynamics inherent in it doesn't make someone racist.

In calling to scrap Comic Relief like D. Lammy, some may have overlooked the fact that Comic Relief does actually also cater for many great projects in the UK too. Remember the promotional pieces to camera for that too. Then again, theyre raising massive life changing differences to kids lives here and I wouldnt be arsed about (and Ive cleamed that up) what was the colour of the promoter's skin. It doesnt matter. British born black actor/entertainer Sir Lennie Henry has done a few of these Comic Relief promotional videos abroad... Is that bad too.. and has he been criticised ? No hairshirts though please. We give billions around the world that people here dont generally know about. ChrIst knows...theres worse things to criticise us for.. than giving people millions and millions of pounds on trust to help.

.

and to think the Chinese are actually the ones doing far more work in African nations than Westerners, and we hear nary a peep about race relations (or lack thereof) between the Chinese & local Africans.

I think we Westerners (whether light skin or dark skin) are just obsessed with identity-politics. The Chinese & Africans just accept their differences and get their head down to work.

We must have Sino-phobic thread immediately!

"Anti-Semitism!!!!"

Some of the comments in response to that tweet are absolutely nuts.

Some calling him an anti-semite while simultaneously conflating Israel with anti-Semitism, some asking why he doesn't condemn selling weapons to the Saudis (he has), some arguing that the UNHRC is anti - Israeli while conflating that with Anti - Semitism.

The fact that you are starting the post with a reminder to people that 'comic relief does work in the UK as well' only serves to strengthen the point David Lammy is making - because, having to remind people of that fact, highlights that most see it as 'aid to Africa'

Lenny Henry is entitled to do the promotional videos, as anyone else is, whatever the color of their skin. However, what does it matter if it's Lenny Henry or even David Lammy doing it. They're not African, why not have an African voice giving the narrative? If the prevailing narrative is that Africa is only poverty and corruption, while not recognising it's contribution, then it's a problem.

We spend about 0.7% of our Gross National Income on overseas aid, of which around 50% goes to Africa. Lammy is clearly not saying you shouldn't give aid, he's arguing that you shouldn't give aid with one action while perpetuating a stereotype that all Africans need aid and have nothing else to contribute to the world.

we hear quite a bit about race relations (or lack thereof) between the Chinese & local Africans, only I don't feel the need to know anything about about it before spouting off online to score tangential points reinforcing my own sense of white martyrdom

The Chinese & Africans just accept their differences and get their head down to work.

Hmmm... conflating 1.3 billion people and 1.2 billion people (divided into 54 countries and speaking hundreds of different languages) into inaccurate, lazy and patronising stereotypes.

What's the word for this again?

look between the lines and you'll find biased anti-chinese reporting. the "chinese master" quote is a dead giveaway. the westerners are more than a little put out how China just get on with it when it comes to development in Africa.

on the ground (tho' i can only speak of Ghana so far) i hear the African people are relatively ok with the chinese. they have a "different attitude" towards Africa than the West: less 'saviour', more business-like.

it's the Torygraph, so obviously the headline is terrible. now read the actual article.

you should probably read the actual lines first before confusing yourself trying to read between them.

or to put it more simply, stop pretending you haven't been caught spewing rubbish about something you know nothing about (and not for the first time either), and next time, first spend a minute or two checking if what you "hear" (whatever that means) about the "the African people" is actually true.

in this case, it is not.

There is nothing racist about what he said.

He has singled out a persons' skin colour as an issue.

The definition of racism is prejudice based solely on race/the colour of their skin. In that tweet, Lammy is doing exactly that by portraying the 'white saviour' as morally inferior.

It is textbook racism. He wouldn't have wrote 'black saviour' for Lenny Henry. Ask yourself why.
