That public inquiry will be like a ticking time bomb for Starmer.
His decision to arrest thousands and hand out long sentences after those riots will be counterposed with him now admitting he knew this was an act of terrorism.
Rightly or wrongly he'll be seen as duplicitous and someone withholding information from the public. Journalists knew and they were told to remain silent.
Starmer's tried to get out ahead of it this morning but he'll find it impossible to control the fall out of this now.

There is a lot of nonsense posted here, Dave.
When the London Bridge attack happened, would people have been justified to attack Met and City cops over it? Would they have been justified in smashing up an Eastern Orthodox Church over it?
The public don’t, for very good reasons, have a right to know everything. They dont have a right to riot over it either.

No 10 declines to criticise Trump's decision to pull out of Paris climate agreement, saying it won't give 'running commentary'
Downing Street has refused to criticised President Trump for his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.
Why shouldn't the public know the full truth? There has been examples over the last several years where withholding information / truth and more importantly using social media as a weapon has proven to be dangerous. Even during covid , whatever your personal views are, so much information was witheld or denied despite it being true and people genuinely go by what they are told (or not told) and act accordingly. What sort of society, given the accusations thrown across the water currently, holds information back and sees that as a good thing? To what extent are you happy to have your perspective controlled by the flow of information? In this case with Southport, people were given criminal records for stating the truth. There is a lot of nonsense posted here, Dave.

Good signs.

Its a slippery slope.
The word was put out that there was no terrorism angle to the attack and the coppers and government knew that wasn't true.
I get that there's a reason for withholding information, but stating a falsehood like that was wrong. The media and even MPs were told to cover up the truth. How sinister is that, btw?
The coppers and the government shat it and failed to see that stating the reality could be done AND civil order kept.
Yep and let's see how $%&£ that will pan out if it happens. I hope we pay attention to the current events in the US over the last day or so to see if we want a bit of that.Honestly it's getting to the point where reform will have to win so people can realise they won't solve all your problems
