I am a pensioner, I am partially retired, I continue to work 3 days per week. I don’t need a winter fuel payment. I have no issue with benefits being targeted to the least well off in our society when money is tight. We live in the 5th richest country in the world, money isn’t tight, it is a choice to channel it to the richest people in the country. It is the ideology of Britain that the rich have to get richer so that they can trickle their wealth down. Anything else would be socialism and we can’t be doing with that. The real tragedy here is not that some pensioners will suffer hardship this winter but that there is no legitimate reason for them to suffer, a progressive tax system would allow Britain to take care of the needy.

I would hope not with "Government of Service" not Self Service...

It wouldn't surprise me if they toughed it out and backed him. They know that if one gets dismissed the rest of the substandard puppet MPs will be under the micro-scope too.

This is all down to Starmer and his gang looking to turf out any sort of internal opposition. They'd rather have a pliant scumbag as an MP than a competent and free-thinking MP. The 'Labour' parliamentary party will be infested with Athwal's.

Should be hoofed out the Party now.

"The Canary is not accusing either Jas Athwal or his wife of illegality. What we are saying is that they take full advantage of the way the system is set up to benefit the rich – by paying even less tax than the rest of us.

Are these the values of a Labour MP? Under Keir Starmer, clearly they are."

Factor in the failures to keep pre school children safe while being tax efficient. Its pretty damming. If it were first class business supplying good excellent child care could look past its "efficient" tax affairs. Wont with this context, he needs hoofing. If this were a Tory many would be screaming Tory greed.

The ever more complicating systems dreamed up to ensure the best accountants can find an exploit for their clients are the issue. This problem isn't limited to just substandard health/child care. Every facet of life is under attack from individuals that want to drain as much out of a business proposition and leave the user/payer with as little to nothing as possible. Exploitative attitudes. "I'm alright Jack!".

That's one hard faced grifting scumbag.

Keir Starmer has strongly defended his decision to accept corporate hospitality at Arsenal – while ducking questions about why he allowed a donor to pay for his glasses.

He has recorded a large number of regional TV interviews, and in several of them he was asked to justify accepting tickets, clothing and other gifts while leader of the opposition. Although information about the donations has been in the public domain for some time, there has been renewed interest in the gifts following the Sunday Times revelation that a donor also paid for some clothing for his wife.

Today ITV revealed that Starmer has now been given the use of a corporate box at Arsenal, the club he supports. In an interview with Simon Harris for ITV London, Starmer defended accepting this gift, saying it would save the taxpayer money. He explained:

Yes, very. I’ve had season tickets, Arsenal for a long time now, up in the stands where I’ve gone with my boy and my friends for year after year after year.

Now I’m prime minister. The security advice is that I can’t go to the stands. Or if I did, you’d have to do so much to the security and it would cost the taxpayer a fortune as a result.

I’ve been offered tickets elsewhere in the ground where it’s more secure. We don’t have to use taxpayer money on additional security. And that’s why I’ve taken the decision that I have.
Starmer also said people would think it was “self-centred” if he insisted on staying in the stands, at a greater cost to the taxpayer.

Asked if he was worried about being seen as “parliament’s king of freebies”, Starmer repeated the argument about football, and how being in a corporate box saved the taxpayer money.

As opposition leader he accepted almost 40 free sets of tickets, and at the time he argued that security was a factor – because he had protection officers at that point too, and they did not want him in the stands.

In a separate interview, with ITV Calendar’s Charanpreet Khaira, Starmer was asked how could defend taking £300 from pensioners (if they lose the maximum winter fuel payment) while wearing glasses worth £2,000. He was also asked if he was like Rishi Sunak, whom he criticised for being out of touch.

In his replies, Starmer did not talk about donations but said he was focused on delivering change.

Starmer has declared receiving “multiple pairs of glasses” worth a total of £2,485 from a donor before the election.

He and wife could actually instruct the accountant not to be the most tax efficient, that is allowed. Still its the failure to keep children safe which sows him up as the greedy git.

Yes, ok. If they want to hand it back let them. But if you break with universality you end up with millions more pensioners who can ill afford to lose winter fuel payments. So the best policy is to not target.

I don't support the policy mate.

My issue is more the gripe of people who said nothing about benefits being cut to kids, getting offended now. It's rank hypocrisy.

A lot of people are falling for the tactic that's no doubt been set by this government: divide and rule and have young set against old etc.

It's not a zero sum game. We can condemn both thr attack on pensioners and children / young adults.
