I really wouldn’t have expected it from Labour.
Why?

Is it because you hold Labour to a higher moral standard than the Tory governments you & the majority of the over 60s have enabled?

All while pocketing handouts to turn a blind eye to the corruption & harm being caused.

& that’s before you voted for more long lasting harm despite all the warnings to believe an uncaring toe rag with a bus for the gullible.

This has been a terrible start to their Government from Labour. Starmer threatening to fire any MPs who voted against snatching away the winter fuel allowance was an absolute disgrace. Under him, they're no better than the Tories.
Just a sliiiiiiiiiiight exaggeration. Until Starmer tells the cabinet to let the bodies pile high, he's not that bad.

Starmer has secured and achieved a key policy and proven his strength and robust approach. Second, the WFA could have endured forever as universal but now it is linked to means tested allowances that can be tweaked as required. Third, it helps the Boomer generation who never had it so good understand the gravity of the mess the Tories left us. Fourth, come October, when we all face pain, he can partially protect pensioners stating they have already done their bit. I think many will see that as fair and equitable political trade.

"Snatching" away the allowance to fund wage increases to key workers who have had real terms pay cuts for a decade is a world away from a government bunging it all instead to the likes of Michelle Mone to stash offshore and buy yachts with.

They even allowed a vote on it when they didn't need to, complete contrast to the Tories sneaking as much as they could through away from scrutiny. Remember that Gina Miller had to go to court to force May to take her Brexit deal to the Commons - they were literally going to define the near future of the country along their own whims without anyone else getting a say. And Johnson's illegal prorogation stands out alone as the most contemptuous move against democracy any PM could have made.

Proper "breath of fresh air" sensible politics from a team doing a difficult job.

Claims have doubled since the announcement. So word is getting out even before the government implements specifics.

5000 additional vulnerable pensioners are making new claims to an entitlement they are owed each week. A good thing no?

And I’d question the impact of the “backlash” outside of the newspapers appealing to their Tory/Reform readers there’s a lot of support for means testing.
The right of the political spectrum was championing the move to the right in particular by the young voter. And means testing benefits is very political right thinking. Be careful for what you wish for. I'm sure Labour have done their feedback and there is broad agreement in focus groups.

Interesting take you have after 8 weeks.

Just out of interest does the golden refer to your age? Bit like the Golden Girls?
