I wonder what positive earth shattering policy to ‘rebuild’ the nation K9 will announce today…
My mate has a nephew, whose mate is a policy wonk sort for Labour. I know I know, this is a bit transfer ITK, but it's all I've got...

Apparently Sir Keir is seriously considering a proposal to close all public houses in the UK, purchase, and repurpose them as social housing. Apparently it'll be a private finance I initiative type deal. The justification is threefold:

A) it will significantly reduce negative health and crime stemming from drinking. So positive impact on public health, policing, antisocial behaviour.
B) Solves the housing crisis
C) generates jobs (retrofitting) and growth

I've obviously not seen the impact and economic evaluations etc, but they all check out I'm told. That includes the social impact factoring in things like employment in hospitality and community benefits of pubs.

The only think stopping this legislative program being actioned is the very real fear of negative headlines. "No more beer says Sir Keir" is thought to be odds on from the Sun or Mail and the equivalent of "Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher".

A crying shame that such nitwittery will deter a progressive agenda. There's apparently more that fail the 'middle England aggro-rag test' as its known in policy circles.

Truly this country is held hostage.

This smoking ban thing can't be real, it's utterly insane and I don't even smoke

I met my gf and a lot of my proper friends in the smoking areas in clubs, they can be the best places on earth to meet people

80% of the women I have slept with I met in the smoking area.

I don't smoke now, but the only time i really miss it is when I'm out drinking.

Great way to break up the night and meet people.

Seems a ridiculous policy to me. Not that many people even smoke these days.

I have my concerns about the impact on a struggling hospitality industry but I’ll be honest we heard a lot of horror stories before the smoking ban . Also lt’s never really bothered me but I’ve become conscious of people smoking outside on tables and how much your clothes stink . A lot of smokers seem to have a lot of respect for others and actually step away .

Like I say I have some concerns but to pretend that smoking isn’t an issue feels like delusion . Less than 15% of the population smoke smoke but it costs us £2.5 BILLION a year which is 2% of the total NHS budget , there are 500,000 admissions and 80,000 smoking related deaths a year . Interesting that this seems to have started under the Tory government, if I search Pete will I see your outrage ?
Agreed, I don't have too much of an issue with a ban of smoking in outdoor public places. Fine to have designated smoking areas in hospitality facilities and what have you, but happy for it to be banned from other public areas like town centres, train stations, public streets etc. Definitely very difficult to enforce but I would imagine in a lot of places it would police itself in a way.

As public health is a devolved issue the smoking ban might only apply in England.

Can see it now, Wales doesn't enact it and suddenly all the tourists who were crying when the 20mph speed limit was put in place. Will be flooding back (at 20mph) to fill the beer gardens of Llandudno, Colwyn bay and Abersoch.
Charge a tourist tax on them to smoke in the beer gardens if that happens, 20p a cigarette! Easy money

Flexibility in the workplace leading to the option of a 4 day week!!

😊
Ah, the meltdown will be magic.

"In my day we worked every hour we had to put food on the table and to buy cigarettes TO SMOKE WHERE WE DAMN WELL LIKED.

Grrr, bloody woke flake millennial entitled people ruining my country. Them and the forens"
