….my daughter is an NHS Consultant and I also had a good chat with a London based nurse last week and they both mainly allude to the costly waste of uneccessary middle-managers. The nurse told me she has two office bound ‘sisters’ who are rarely seen from a clinical perspective and are basically report writers. My daughter tells of beurocratic managers taking all office space and naively managing clinical matters.
I wonder if Labour might try to address this. Maybe utilising Nightingale wards to free up beds and manage the transition to social care. Move uneccessary staff to directly manage that facility.
Tough task ahead.
It is very similar in the Armed Forces, in that it is 'top heavy' due to the amount of cuts that have occurred over the last 14 years.
In terms of numbers, there are probably enough to maintain a strong force, however, the recruitment is not happening fast enough and people leave once pension age kicks in due to the decline in pay, meaning there are far too many managers and not enough doers.
It is something that won't fix itself overnight but hopefully, the new government can look into sorting it.
