Mainly stay away, its a toxic thread. Just posted prior to this and wont again for a while. Have been of the opinion from the onset this is all about UK politics and not about the people of Gazza or Israel, navel gazing keyboard warriors insisting on calling for a ceasefire...

Oh, this is certainly about UK politics now. Do you really think you want a Speaker to be beholden to the government of the day, to be pushed about at will unless he or she gives them what they want?

I certainly don't.

Are you purposely spelling Gaza incorrectly?

Typing fast... As i enjoy tactical side of politics (always good to remove emotion).

Hoyle not actually done 'anything' wrong for me...

What he has done is different to the intended spirit and 'tradition'

A Tory party who've outright lied to parliament and the SNP who've completely fallen apart trying to get one over on Labour have just been outsmarted, outgunned and shown up how pathetic they are on TV for all.

The interesting thing is that everyone has said Hoyle is useless to holding the Tory party to order at PMQS and the way they treat parliament with contempt but now its the Tories who now want rid of him. Win win chicken dinner.

Anways, the hunting horn has sounded to pile in over spelling, ill bid you a very good night dont forget put the best left foot forward in Gaza and Israel.

The Speaker must be independent and able to represent the whole of the Commons. Any act which reduces that independence, or sets a clear precedent for what would come if the person making the threat was in a position to do it, must be opposed by everyone interested in having a free Parliament.

What Starmer did today is similar to what Charles I tried to do just before the start of the Civil War. Lenthall then defied him, its a shame that Hoyle didn't do that today.

I like to chill out and smoke a bit crack on Wednesdays as well

Can someone, please explain - as if they were speaking to a small child or family pet - what has happened today in parliament.

Be arsed reading pages of the Guardian live blog.

The SNP had an Opposition Day and called for a debate and vote on a ceasefire, knowing that a lot of Labour MPs would vote for it even though Starmer was imposing a three line whip on it (which means it is a direct order from the leadership, defying it can mean loss of office and/or being kicked out of the parliamentary party). Labour did their advanced politics thing and got a less clear amendment of their own. The Tories then advanced their own amendment, which (according to the Clerk of the Commons) should have been called instead of the Labour one, which would have made Labour MPs only able to vote for the SNP one.

Starmer and his advanced political minds decided to break with tradition by threatening the Speaker (who is meant to be independent) that he'd be out on his arse come the next Speaker election if he didnt call their amendment. He caved in, and the Tories and SNP walked out.

In short everyone was playing politics, rather than doing what 99% of the population was demanding they do and vote according to their own consciences.

No member of parliament vote according to their conscience, except the mad, bad, and dangerous to know.

Thanks, sincerely, that helps.

Well we certainly don’t want said speaker to be pushed around by the opposition who actually did it. I like Hoyle, thought he was decent but he’s blown it I’m afraid…

No, Starmer was playing politics and now it’s blown up in his face…..
