Using the same logic though, you could say that mass migration was high up the list of concerns which both of us would take issue with.
What the public are or aren’t concerned with shouldn’t necessarily dictate policy.
No, I wouldn't say they should either, I was merely saying that the tweeter's assertion that the people of Wigan would vote out Nandy based on her stance on this issue seems unlikely.

Again though Bruce, the question should be why is it so important to their elected representatives?

If you asked that question of MPs (or Senators / members of the House) it would be an entirely purple bar. Judging by the money being spent / pledged in the US to punish those insufficiently behind one side, it may well be that it’s the most important issue.
I don't know tbh. I wonder if there are parallels with the Tories and Europe, in that Tory members think that issue is hugely important, so it drives the policy agenda even while the average Tory voter doesn't really care. I suspect Palestine is very important for the average Labour member, and far more so than for the average Labour voter.

I care more about kids starving in this country than I do about anything else.

Sure I can show compassion for the situation in Gaza and Ukraine, but it's very low down on my list of things I want "fixing".

I think those are useful comparisons to make, because of course that’s not what we see at the moment - the issue enjoys a cross party unity along one axis that just doesn’t exist in public opinion. Most people either don’t care, are neutral or support Palestine. The vast majority of politicians think something different.

It is one of the few issues (the only other one I can think of is whether MPs are value for money) where political opinion is so out of kilter with public opinion. As I said earlier, I think people should be a lot more concerned about it than they are because of what it is leading to.

Whilst maybe not as a stand alone issue but I don’t think it will do her any good. Plenty of people are finding it harder and harder to justify backing Labour, even on an anti Tory vote.

I think Labour are taking much of their base vote for granted tbh and not sure this will work so well. When their election manifesto is eventually released it will be more heavily scrutinised than usual from the left and right, so can see them ending up in some very difficult situations.

Reckon you could break that down even further to Labour members currently working in public services to Labour members long retired or not public facing.

Bruce polling for several years shows consistently that being neutral or pro-Palestine (or don’t know) in this conflict is consistently higher than being pro-Israel (which even now after Oct 7th and months of daily coverage is a position that less than 20% of people hold):

Yes, the conflict itself not an issue itself that the vast majority of people care about - but what motivates our politicians is something people care strongly about.

Why do so many of them take such a strongly pro-Israel line?

Politicians care about the bilateral trade deal we have with Israel in regards to selling weapons and surveillance to each other. One lesson Starmer has learned from Corbyn is dont upset your Unions. Remember when Corbyn spoke about decommissioning Trident and our Nuclear weapon capability Corbyn biggest critics where Unions involved in arms industry. Recall him flailing about trying to calm it all down saying we could repurpose Trident fleet, who knows what to, firing daisy chains wrapped round with eat Tofu leaflets to save the world... Pro-Israel because its of mutual economic benefit.

They are our 40th biggest trading partner, way behind other states. If economic benefit was what mattered surely we'd be pro-EU?

That’s a good point on them taking their base for granted and their manifesto. It does feel like Starmer’s been a bit overly-willing to say / do things liable to annoy his base. Case in point being his unnecessary praise of Thatcher which is bound to infuriate a massive chunk of Labour’s base supporters.

People are talking about a landslide like 97, I’d be surprised to see that. A lot will happen between now and November.

I think if Labour win, it’ll be a 2020 US election style result where they’ve only won because their opposition is so useless.

By-and-large UK politics absolutely stinks currently and there aren’t many politicians in front-line politics that I don’t find at least a little bit repulsive

It’s difficult isn’t it. Natural compassion puts you in a quandary regarding events outside of the U.K. because you want the best for everyone. It’s almost a hierarchy of things to be addressed, everyone has a different list. I get slagged off because my list is my kids, my friends kids, the kids in the village, the kids in the U.K., then those in various African countries that basically have no chance and no one is marching in the streets of London for them and so on. I know it may be wrong but that’s the list of things I want fixing……
