See Lisa Nandy appeared at a support for Israel March with the ex Tory Christian Wakefield and the chief rabbi who is a genocide apologist. Also his son who is a British citizen has been fighting for the IDF.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I suspect the good pie eaters of Wigan are less bothered by the Israel-Palestine situation than the author of that tweet supposes.

They really should be bothered by it though; everyone should.

There is a chasm between what the population thinks and what a large majority of national politicians and the press thinks on this issue.

Given the amount of risk caused by this crisis, especially to the international system we developed at such cost, it’s vital that our leaders operate from a position of honesty and public support.

All fair comment, but what will you put in her place? Another "Conservative Friend of Israel" most probably.

You commented on the Labour candidate yesterday being out of touch and I'd argue this is no different. It matters to you, that much is clear. It matters to other university educated people, sure. From experience working with Brexit voting communities though, this kind of thing is irrelevant.

We can rightly say that the Davos set don't have a clue about Brexiteers or Trump supporters, but I don't think Corbynistas do either.

It's like the referendum all over again. We use rationale or morality we're certain of and assume our weight of evidence will convince people who use different measures.

Bruce polling for several years shows consistently that being neutral or pro-Palestine (or don’t know) in this conflict is consistently higher than being pro-Israel (which even now after Oct 7th and months of daily coverage is a position that less than 20% of people hold):

Yes, the conflict itself not an issue itself that the vast majority of people care about - but what motivates our politicians is something people care strongly about.

Why do so many of them take such a strongly pro-Israel line?

People are overloaded, besides busy lives and making ends meet. The sheer scale of negative headlines and hyperbole has the masses groaning and switching off. 'Oh for a simpler life' they say as they recharge their smart phone, 'Oh wont someone do something about the evils of the world' as they barrage themselves with 24 hour news. It's easier to switch off than engage, it's easier to reach for an umbrella answer than apply some thought to a difficult and complex issue. A roof over my family, three squares on the table, and preferably as little danger day to day as possible. Anything extra is a luxury.

The powerlessness day to day puts those that care off, then add in the reality of the self harm of the brexit con and secretly admitting to yourself how wrong you got it and the cost thereof. We got sold snake oil again, and now times are harder than they've been for a couple of generations.
Slow and steady erosion of trust in politics, in society, in ones fellow human, in truth and faith and right and justice. Keep your head down and limp by, the system is watching...

I posted this survey from last year before. I'm guessing, but I would imagine somewhere like Wigan would be even more in the "not very much and not at all" camp than the national average.

Using the same logic though, you could say that mass migration was high up the list of concerns which both of us would take issue with.
What the public are or aren’t concerned with shouldn’t necessarily dictate policy.

This is a valid point, especually when you consider the sources of influence at play.

Again though Bruce, the question should be why is it so important to their elected representatives?

If you asked that question of MPs (or Senators / members of the House) it would be an entirely purple bar. Judging by the money being spent / pledged in the US to punish those insufficiently behind one side, it may well be that it’s the most important issue.
