Well Truss gave Starmer a good beating. May pointed out that the conservatives are now on their 3rd female PM while Labour haven’t had a single female Leader. Truss also suggested none from outside north London.

Immediately after PMQ’s, Labours female shadow minister for women and equalities resigned her post…….

I thought Starmer won pretty hands down mate.

The bit where he said she was going to tax ordinary people to pay for their mess, rather than ask the energy companies sort of summed it up for me. That showed to me Truss wasnt on the side of ordinary people like me.

Today, a Conservative MP asked Starmer at what rate he would tax. He didn’t answer. Later on in the debate the same MP pointed out that more than half the companies are actually foreign owned and that those that come under HMRC are already paying a windfall tax of 65%. Hence why Starmer wouldn’t answer. He’s just playing politics….

Well why shouldn't they pay higher, given they are screaming off record profits off the back of small businesses and hard working people mate?

Why am I being taxed to pay for their greed? Or other local businesses who are going to be crippled by it.

What impact, to an already weakened pound is the government plan to add borrowing to well over 100% of GDP going to do mate? You cant just keep printing money without consequence.

We are in a world of least worst options. It seems to me like Truss is just taking the easy option to avoid making her mates pay their fair share (all in my opinion of course).

I am no supporter, but taxing the power companies at even 100% would not touch the sides of the cost of capping the fuel cap at £2500. We are where we are.

That said, I still cant quite grasp why one gas pipe on earth being shut/reduced leads to this increase in wholesale prices.

Only in the UK apparently. Can’t find the comparable chart for gas right now. Here’s leccy prices.1662655918471.webp

Thats the thing We get hardly gas from Russia. Sommet aint right is it?
That’s what they were trumpeting a few months ago. The UK aren’t affected because we only get 4-7% of our gas from Russia and we can easily replace that.

Europe are goosed, we’ll be ok. Not how it turned out.

I can only guess it’s because we did away with our gas storage, so have to buy at daily spot prices. Also all leccy, no matter how it’s generated, being charged at the same price as gas generation.

Plus compensation for the suppliers that went bust, plus green levies.

Mental.

I was always sceptical about some of the hysterical suggestions of the price cap being up in the £6000 area in the new year.

And I understand economics. So when demand went mad after a global lock down, I got that. But demand now, unless I have missed sommet, is normal. And I just dont believe one pipeline can shaft the price as a supplier

The FT reports that we are not the dearest in Europe for gas. Where we apparently get whacked is because we generate more leccy from gas than anyone else, so have to buy more of it.

Also the lack of UK storage. Apparently our wholesale gas prices are low right now, because of longstanding LPG contracts. We’re exporting that to Europe though, so that they can fill their storage systems.

Because the government hasnt diversified sufficiently. So we are very exposed.

1, is they are just greedy so and so's and falls.on to the narrative of governments and large corporations wanting every last penny from us,.one way or another.
Talk a good game, high skill high wage. But nobody is seeing that high wage.

2: Pretty leftfield this one. But this is a ploy to give the large corporations a metric F ton of money. So that they invest in other forms of fuel.
Nuclear, wind, water, solar etc. Skimming from us to get things moving quicker.
I wouldn't be surprised in a year or 2 we start hearing of massive investment in alternative fuels.

One thing I am surprised at. Why are all new houses not mandated to install solar panels and storage batteries?
