Current Affairs The Labour Party

I voted for Starmer as leader, I knew what I was getting into and that he wouldn't bring about the changes I want to see from an ideological point of view. I voted for him in desperation as removing this vile tory party and seeing the untold levels of damage they are causing at least slowed. He is making the political choices I thought he would and I can't pretend to be surprised now. I do want to hear more on climate action from him and where his labour party would sit on that, and if they will back our best and brightest. However. I am aware that preservation of the planet isn't as much of a vote winner in the UK as persecuting ethnic minorities.

It was just waffle though, he just looked like a rabbit stuck in the headlights (again)

Yes, just more political speak and no commitments. The pay review bodies are clearly austerity led and are not fit for purpose.

Considering how badly the last decade has been for the working class an inflation matching increase should be the bare minimum expectation.

Are we classing degree-holding civil servants as "working class" now?

He said he would stand by what the pay review bodies decide and not interfere. Seemed pretty straightforward to me. I get people want him to come into office and throw money about left, right, and centre, but an unwillingness to do that doesn't make him unclear, surely?

While I agree with the point of pay bodies being independent of political interference, his answer did come across as paying lip service, which is a common trend.

In reality, the pay review bodies are designed to help ensure that the recommendation is fair rather than being limited by principles of austerity and whatnot.

While 4-5% isn't going to keep up with inflation, I suspect some governments would want to pay less; a government wanting to pay more isn't the same thing.

What are Labour's policies? Does anyone really know?

Paid for by everybody else working in the private sector. Is that just ?

It has never been much easier to change employment, certainly in the past fifteen years. There is an argument that if these people aren’t happy with their remuneration and can demonstrate they are worth more then they should explore the job market.

but, it just adds confusion to what Labour's policies actually are. I can't see this, and many other interviews he does, winning many votes. It wasn't really a comment on the subject matter, more on just the pointlessness of it all

The private sector generally has had much better increases in wages over the past decade. Parts of the public sector have had very little wage growth.

Also your solution will result in an even worse standard of public services so how is that a good move for the government? The quality of health and education for example is only going to get worse if people keep leaving those industries due to poor pay.
