Thanks

I'm from Madrid. 4th generation Atletico supporter

Depends on what you mean by useful. He can play on various position but not very well. A poor mans Phill Neville.

I heard Phill Neville is a MASSIVE player who Atletico rate very highly(y)

Wind up.

I wouldn't worry about our Atletico supporters's sentiments. It is like our fans going onto the Man City website spewing about how [Poor language removed] Lescott really is.

Heitinga was [Poor language removed] at Atletico...
Pienaar was [Poor language removed] in Germany...
Arteta warmed the bench in Spain...

A pattern, methinks.

I've seen Heitinga play for Ajax, and more recently for the Netherlands. As I said earlier in the thread, I would have traded him for Lescott, never mind the extra $17million (or whatever). Two years younger as well.

I am delighted with this signing but was rather disappointed there was no other signing after this one, someone has been going on if there was any free transfer player worth signing up for a season, who knows?

One things for sure this guy could certainly take some nice free-kick and score some cracking goal for time to time, certainly an extra free-kick taker for Everton and expect him to score couple of goals for Everton this season!

I am sure some of you have seen this clip on youtube, which is about his time in Ajax, you could check it out and I think he would be a great signing for us.

We wont have positivity like that on here.

Its not 2007 you know.

1st interview on the OS

John Heitinga is proud to be an Everton player.

The Dutch international defender completed a deadline-beating £6m transfer from Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, becoming the Blues' fourth summer acquisition.

After finalising his five-year deal, Heitinga jetted off to meet up with the Holland squad but before doing so he spoke only to evertonTV.

"I am proud to sign at the People's Club," he told us. "It's a nice club and a club with a big history.

"I saw a lot of Everton games last season and they have a strong team.

"I spoke with the manager earlier and the feelings were good. The training ground is really good and it's a typical English stadium and I love it."

The versatile 25-year-old was at Ajax before moving to Madrid, and he played alongside Toffees midfielder Steven Pienaar for five years.

He's looking forward to renewing that acquaintance.

"I haven't spoken to Steven yet because he is away with his national team, but I will speak to him soon," continued Heitinga.

"I am looking forward to linking up with him again because he is a good player."

Just seen his interview on Evertontv, the Dutch accent is great.

He says 'it's great to sign for the peoples club'. I wonder who put him up to that?

10 things you need to know about Everton new boy John Heitinga

Everton have snapped up John Heitinga from Atletico Madrid. But what do we know about the Dutchman? MirrorFootball presents the essential guide...

1) He was born on November 15, 1983 in Alphen aan den Rijn, a town situated in the western Netherlands - which, wait for it, boasts the world's first bird park, Avifauna, opened in 1950. His full name is John Gijsbert Alan Heitinga.

2) He joined the fabled Ajax youth academy aged 7 after his mum had treated him to a coaching course at the club, who were suitably impressed and promptly snapped him up.

3) Just over ten years later, on August 26, 2001, Heitinga made his debut for the Ajax first team against Feyenoord, at the age of 17 years and 284 days. He endured a mixed campaign, however, as the joy of winning a League and Cup double in his debut season was marred by a serious knee injury which kept him on the sidelines for six months.

4) After returning to full fitness, Heitinga became a regular in the Ajax team once more and made his international debut for Holland on 18 February, 2004 in a friendly against the United States.

5) A first international goal came just two months later in a friendly against Greece. He has since gone on to appear at three consecutive major tournaments, winning 47 caps and scoring six goals along the way.

6) Heitinga helped Ajax to another League title in 2004 and successive Dutch Cup's in 2006 and 2007, a year in which he also signed a contract extension until 2011.

7) He won the Netherlands' Player of the Year award in 2007/08, following in the esteemed footsteps of, er, Afonso Alves. His impressive season caught the attention of Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid, who paid out €10 million to land the Dutchman.

8) He has his own website, in which he lists meeting his girlfriend Charlotte Sophie for the first time as one of his greatest achievements. Charlotte, incidentally, is the sister of former Chelsea star Boudewijn Zenden.

9) Although preferably a centre back, Heitinga has also played for club and country at right-back, while occasionally performing in a holding midfield role.

10) He played 32 games for Madrid last season, scoring 3 goals, but failed to settle in Spain. German club Wolfsburg also showed a strong interest before David Moyes came calling.
