Few Quotes

Johnny Heitinga is like a modern day Ruud Krol.

That is the view of Ajax legend Sjaak Swart, who was an integral part of the Ajax side that won back to back European cups in the 1971 and 1972 seasons. The former Dutch international gave an insight, to the Liverpool Echo, about the type of player Heitinga is and compared him to Krol, who is viewed as one of the best Dutch defenders of all time.

Swart told the Echo: He (Heitinga) has always been bold, but in a good way. He reminded me of my old team-mate Ruud Krol.

“At 17, he was so good that when he was on the ball, the opposition were afraid to try and take it off him. He had so much experience and strength, he could take on three men and play a 40-metre pass as if there was nobody in his way.

“On top of that, his timing is excellent. He always picks the right time to come forward out of defence. And he could smash the ball home from 35 yards out.

“That’s why he scored as many as 17 goals as a defender for Ajax’s top junior team.

“If there was one weakness in his game it was that he would sometimes give away too many cheap free-kicks, and pick up too many yellow cards. But that’s something he has worked on.

“Jaap Stam was very good for him at Ajax, he helped him hone some of the final elements of his game. You will always see him talking to the other defenders, organising the back line. And he still loves to get forward, and still scores a lot of goals.

David Moyes today urged Evertonians to be patient with Everton's new acquisitions.

The international break has scuppered any chance of Moyes being able to bed in Johnny Heitinga and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov into his squad, and whilst Sylvain Distin is still on Merseyside Moyes insists it will also take time the 31 year old defender to get to grips with how the system works at Everton.

Moyes spoke to the Liverpool Echo, following the capture of Johnny Heitinga, and said: “On paper, all three players look very exciting signings. We know what Sylvain Distin can do but the other two players are new to the Premier League.

“Their lack of experience of English football is my only concern. It’s certainly not their ability as footballers but in the past it has taken Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines, who went on to become excellent footballers for us, a period of time to settle.

“So we may have to be patient with the new boys.

"We are really pleased to have him (Heitinga) with us. He is an experienced and versatile player who can hopefully fill a number of different positions in the team. I am sure he will be an exciting signing for us.”

I think, when this came up the other day, Danny mentioned that our top payed players have a clause in their contract that they'll always be our top payed players.

So if Heitinga is on more they'll all be on more.

Now I dunno if thats true but if it is, it'll make those guys happy you'd think. And obviously Moyes will know how much it'll cost us.

So he must have decided both that we can afford those wages and that Heitinga is worth it. Thats good enough for me.

I cant see many of the players having the highest paid clause. Yak for sure, Arteta maybe, theres not many that could get it to be honest. Im sure Pienaar is pushing for it, rightly so in a way, hes been by far our best player recently.
