The Horror

Looking at that list you don't even have to play on a Saturday.
So all you need to do is keep fit, but that's too much like hard work that, so I reckon being an agent is the way forward for me.
I'd love to be fit. You can be my agent and have a nice cup of tea inside whilst I have a bit of a run around with the others. I'm aiming for somewhere between a total blowing out your ar.. after pulling your shirt over your head Ashley Williams level of fitness and a Delofeu, couple of sprints and a sit down level. It'd be brilliant - can I get a 5 year deal and one year to extend option please, somewhere in the £100k a week level would be fine Mr 15%.

Of the players bought by previous managers, the period of time until their contracts expire will result in the following expenditure (figures taken from websites):

Sigurdsson 30 June 2022: £100,000 pw x 141 weeks = £14,100,000
Tosun 30 June 2022: £60,000 pw x 141 weeks = £8,460,000
Keane 30 June 2022: £60,000 pw x 141 weeks = £8,460,000
Schneiderlin 30 June 2021: £100,000 pw x 89 weeks = £8,900,000
Walcott 30 June 2021: £100,000 pw x 89 weeks = £8,900,000
Niasse 30 June 2020: £55,000 pw x 37 weeks = £2,035,000
Martina 30 June 2020: £35,000 pw x 37 weeks = £1,295,000

TOTAL: £52,150,000

I suspect some of these figures may be wrong for the amount they are being paid. I would imagine Walcott is on more than £100,000 per week. Also I would expect contracts will include payments of loyalty bonuses.

We saw with Mirallas that we couldn't sell him. Eventually we had to let him go without receiving a fee and I suspect we probably paid him the majority of the total sum owed to him on the remainder of his contract. So it seems highly unlikely we will get rid of many of these players when they are on these wages and lengthy contracts. We could possibly sell Keane given his age but very little chance of selling the others given their ages and and salaries.

There have been many catastrophic decisions made by Everton FC over the years but appointing Walsh as director of football is right up there as one of the worst (Niasse may have been bought before he joined the club).

When you consider the transfer fees paid to bring these players to the club together with the money paid to them already since they joined, it is a tragedy.

Good luck Mr Brands – if you can shift any of these players then you are a genius.

Just sent my c.v in, for the right back/centre forward vacancy, 59k a week is a good starting point on a free transfer I think?. haggling over the spot for my parking space and squad number now.

Remember everyone wetting themselves with excitement over every single one (except Martina).

Four of those are well worth keeping and are contributing.

Are you new to the premier league? Anyone who is shocked by this has been living under a rock, and guess what, there are other players for other clubs earning nearly half a mill a week and not performing(Sanchez anyone).

The money has been spiralling out of control for years.

There's a few who have a use. But the resources they suck up is difficult to justify against their output.

I'm sure also that a few of them if used properly and to their strengths would be a lot more useful. We're slavishly sticking to Silva's systems without adapting to suit who we have as players. Long term I like Silva's style of play, but in the short term he's not getting the best from the likes of Siggurdson or Keane which makes them look bad individually and collectively.

Niasse and Tosun have some use I'm sure. The pair should be set up for 15 minutes of special play when we have to force something to happen. Martina is however just an emergency full back who blocks the progression of a kid into working with the senior squad and gaining experience/ opportunities to kick on.

You do start to appreciate the timescale and difficulty of the task for Brands and Silva with that group.

I know the fans expect immediate results s, and we should definitely be doing better than we currently are in footballing terms, but we need to be thinking about a 5-10 year strategy with regard to recruitment and development.

Haven't we covered this? Have we not shed salt tears over this before? What is to be gained by crying over milk that was spilled in the past, while mr Brands is already busy with his mop and bucket?

Cheer up. The sun still rises each day.*
