Remember us when you've made it.

Just finished reading The Great Gatsby again and it reminded me how much I love reading the American Classics. I've read so far: The Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Anyone recommend another one of the Classics (Not Moby [Poor language removed], heard it's not very good).
Fairly modern classics there, so I'd definitely go with the recommendations for more Steinbeck. John Updike is also worth a look - the Rabbit series of books are a great glance at American suburbia since the Sixties. Maybe try John Irving (Cider House Rules, for example) or Denis Lehane (Any Given Day?) for more current writers. Give On The Road a go as well, see what the Beat writers were on about.

Almost done with "The Numbers Game"...book similar to "MoneyBall" in that it is a statistical analysis of soccer (football). Very well written, particularly if you like seeing how statistics are used to analyze a the game and players.

Have the name of the wind on order, by Patrick Rothfuss - see it gets a lot of recommendations. Just finished the first law trilogy by Abercrombie - excellent, but unremittingly hairy-arsed, so fancy some more fantasy with a different style.

The name of the wind is the best fantasy I've read for ages, including the GOT series. Just finished the second one which was also ace. I should warn you that Rothfuss does end the book quite abruptly, but you can just buy the second one and carry on from there...

The Sun Also Rises. For a short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Bierce is really good.
