The New Leviathans: Thoughts After Liberalism by John Gray 2023

Grey argues that the age of Liberalism is coming to an end and that new Leviathans/power structures and states are emerging to replace it and that the intolerance of the current liberal elite are driving that process. He's particularly scornful of the "wokists".

End Times: Elites, Counter-Elites and the Path of Political Disintegration by by Peter Turchin 2023

Great book that delves into the cycular theory of history and elite theory. The main topics are the "wealth pump" and immiseration pulling society apart and elite overproduction which makes society top heavy and thus increasing the wealth pump. The main focus is the breaking down of the USA, but readers can discern the lesson when applying to most countries.

Unshrinking: How to Face Fatphobia
Book by Kate Manne 2024

Nonsense form a particular type of self hating person. Medical reality and self control is an abstract to this author who desperately craves a place in the oppression Olympics... and cake.
They've all gone on the injections now mate. Fat positivity died when they can just become thin with medicine.

Goliath's Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse by Luke Kemp 2025

Another cycular History/elite theory book, Kemp argues that big civizilations and states go through a series of Societiey collapses and regeneration but that the global civizilation that we currently living predispositions us to a catastrophic collapse. Didn’t really agree with it, especially the pre Hhistory theory's and it got a bit repetitive, but it makes you think.

Sound a fascinating read, good reviews too. Just gone to order on Amazon, paperback not out until June. May order the hardback later today.

Another fantastic book by Larson. As a self-proclaimed Civil War buff haha, even I was blown away by the details and prose in this book. Phenomenal account.

THE GREAT SWINDLE - PIERRE LE MAITRE (2013)

In a novel translated into English by Frank Wynne, French writer Pierre LeMaitre's novel is set in the final weeks of WW1 and its aftermath in a war ravaged France.

The novel begins with an account of a French officer’s ordering of a trench-to-trench attack against German forces at a time when everyone knows that the war is about to end. During the attack, a terrible crime is committed - the first of many. It proceeds to explore further horrors of the war and its aftermath.

Every character, from major to minor, is vividly portrayed. Best of all were Monsieur Péricourt, a tough businessman who had never had time for his artistic, effeminate son, and Merlin, the obnoxious but dogged, soon-to-retire civil servant who is given the job of reporting on the cemetery scandal that is at the heart of the book. If I have a criticism it is that the main villain is unrelentingly villainous, too much so. He's 2D while everyone else is 3D.

Le Maitre describes the chaos of postwar France - the streets where poor, injured returned soldiers struggle to make a living; the houses of the wealthy where money is king; and the cemeteries where exploited Arab and Senegalese workers do what they can to survive. A key sentence which reveals one of the themes of the novel is: "To an entrepreneur, war represents significant business opportunities, even after it is over."

His portrait of a mind torn by the trauma of combat is uncannily accurate: “He was permanently on alert; anything and everything made him suspicious. Serenity, he knew, was gone forever.”

The novel often shockingly forces the reader’s attention to some of the most abhorrent possibilities of human behaviour and to the unimaginable suffering involved in war. But it also provides a story of extraordinary devotion to duty by common soldiers and by an investigator who pursues the truth and, despite all the pressure, does the right thing. It's not unrelentingly grim - there is a surprising amount of humour even in the darkest parts of the story

Frank Wynne is a superb translator who always knows when to choose interpretation over the strictly literal. Good example is describing the main villain as having the face of “an upper-class t-w-a-t” - not a word-for-word translation, but colourfully capturing the spirit of the original French.

THE FALL OF ISRAEL - Mahdi Hamad Fatlawi (2001)

Having noticed that Iran's replacement for Lanjani is Mohammad al-Qadr I decided to reread this book, which he translated from Arabic to Farsi. The title might be a western cosplayer's wet dream but visit any bookshop in Cairo/Amman/Ramallah and you'll find lots of them, most with lurid covers, full of antisemitism, cherry-picked Quranic quotes, conspiracy theories,a warped view of history, and boldly predicting the year of Israel's demise. This one by an Iraqi academic has all of those faults, bar the date, but is better written and coherently organised.

The author attempt to interpret the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the prism of religious concepts, historical traditions, and Quranic verses. He views human history as an arena for a civilisational struggle between the forces of truth and falsehood. The book is divided into 6 parts:

1: The Place of the Islamic World regarding Israel: emphasising the importance of “Islamic awakening” and the formation of axes of resistance. The Islamic Revolution in Iran is presented as a historic turning point and a model for the struggle against the West and Zionism. Islamic entities that don't support their aims should be undermined.

2: Religious Prophecies Regarding the Fate of Israel: focusing on religious interpretations and traditions that refer to the ultimate fate of Israel. Drawing on Quranic verses, hadiths and traditions, it identifies patterns and prophecies that point to the decline and destruction of Israel.

3 The Political Background to the Collapse of Israel: examining factors and processes that will cause the eventual collapse of Israel, such as the strengthening and expansion of resistance movements in the region. The goal is to show that the collapse of Israel is not a fantasy, but is grounded in political realities and developments on the ground.

4 Quranic Prophecies of the Destruction of Israel: similar to the second part but focused more explicitly on Quranic verses. The author seeks to present Quranic evidence that the destruction of Israel is divine will and inevitable through direct interpretation and adaptation of Quranic verses to historical and contemporary developments in the region.

5: Scenarios for the End of Israel’s Existence and the Vision for the Future: presents various scenarios regarding the manner and timing of Israel’s collapse. emphasising the role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the regional system, and offers a description of a future in which Jerusalem is liberated and rule under the Mahdi (messiah) is established.

6: Conclusion - Ties the above to support the basic Islamist theory: Islam came to replace Judaism; therefore the existence of Israel is an abomination and a challenge to the truth of Islam; therefore it is God's work to destroy it, and God's Will that they will eventually succeed, no matter how long it takes and how many defeats they suffer on the way.

This book was required reading when it came out. Published shortly after Arafat disastrously rejected the offer of two states and opted for the violence of the 2nd Intifada, it was an extra component that warned the Oslo Accords were doomed to failure. It presents a window into the worldview of Islamists such as Hamas and the Iranian leadership. 25 years later, with all that has happened and these dead end ideas still around, it just makes me sad.

Working my way through the Christmas books I got.

Bradley Wiggins - The Chain.

A very well written and deep bio, where he bears his soul as part of his recovery from drink and drugs.

From being abandoned by his cyclist father, being sexually abused as a teenager by his coach, winning the Tour de France, to smoking crack in a crack house, going bankrupt, to sobriety and salvation:

A very deep book, but an exceptional read.

Recommended.

Been re-reading some stuff off my shelf to get rid, dracula, hunchback of notre dame, scoop, master and margarita. Scoop was better than remembered, the rest were a slog. I can tell my tastes and habits have changed over the decades.

I went into Dracula with high expectations and hated it. The opening act with Jonathan Harker travelling to meet the Count is excellent, the rest of it is an absolute slog.

Yeah, the dracula and renfield bits are the best parts, the women and the suitors stuff drags it through the floor.
