He can be a bit 'wordy' ; he also did write some excellent ghost/supernatural stories. Haven't read them all, but going from those that I have, I'd highly recommend giving them a go.View attachment 340421
The Go-Between by L. P. Hartley 1953
Coming of age/loss of innocence story about a young boy at the end of the Victorian age who holidays at his school friends estate and gets roped into being the messenger between two socially different lovers, tragedy ensues.
Lovingly written, but I struggled through to the end as I felt the story was basic and the flowery prose of youth was padding out the pages. Glad I finished it though. A book probably more famous for its opening line: The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.
