Stockholm Syndrome.

We are so used to having no money, sell to buy, etc, that we can't accept anything else at face value. Many are trying to be optimistic but those amongst us with Stockholm syndrome cannot let go of the pessimism. The fact that many will say "They're probably right" is a sad indictment of the past 30 years or so.

So then blues, with the potential departure of the league's top goal scorer it felt like the right time to discuss the progress of 'Project Everton.'

With the arrival of our new benevolent, Iranian overlord hopes were high that we would begin to fulfil out potential and become a force within English and European football again. So far results have been mixed so let's review the facts.

Pros:

We can spend money again - transfer targets are no longer restricted to the special bargain basement that Moyes would frequent.

The facelift - Goodison is looking good again (it's been long overdue).

Debts, what debts? - The banks are no longer beating down the door to Kenwright's office demanding we take out a third mortgage on the lawnmower shed.

Bramley Apples - we appear to have a real shot at a world class, waterfront stadium.

Cons.

We can spend money again - with the new TV deals and sales of top footballing talent. Stones gone last summer, Lukaku this summer? Will it be Ross next season? Let's see, but sell to buy doesn't appear to have been jettisoned just yet, instead it's just shifted up a gear.

The facelift - as nice as it is, the upgrade is obviously cosmetic and serves to underline how far we have fallen due to underinvestment down the years. There is a hell of a lot riding on a successful ground move.

Oh those debts... - we have to pay that loan back to Moshiri at some point. Billionaires don't give out free money like that these days.

Kings Dock Bramley Apples - let's face it, we have previous in this area.

So in amongst the fake ITKs, the rumours, positivity, dejection and Jim White, where exactly are we up to in this brave new era? I won't lie, I'm confused. The vibes from the club are telling me that things are on the up as the Goodison propaganda machine is kickstarted in Elstone's office. Reality though is continuing to smack us in the face as only it can when targeting Evertonians.

Help me make sense of things GOT.

Over to you.

We've already got a Moshiri thread mate.
I'm sure Eggs would agree.

But, while the thread lasts, I'll treat it sensibly and say :-

  • We'll get a shiny new stadium and
  • We can't stop our best players leaving until we're one of the very top teams in the country, and even then, we can't stop them going

Upset that there's no white text here.

We can act like a big club tho and not pander to Raiola and the likes demands.

Apart from the timing, it's not massively different to when Chelsea wanted Stones. Eventually of course, he left, but it was pretty much ( ~80% ) under our control when he did.

If he leaves in the Summer, it'll likely be after we've identified a suitable replacement for less than we'd sell him for, and then use the rest of the money for one or two other players. It's a team game, he'd undoubtedly be a big miss if he left, but the club's bigger than any one player.
