The devaluation of the FA Cup

My favourite competition of the lot, I’d do anything to see us lift the cup again. It’s been devalued by the media and the top 6 cartel who are only interested in getting fat off the money out there. The fans of every other club love this competition.

Some of the smaller Premier League teams rest their main players for the Cup, with the onus on staying in the Prem and the riches that brings. Not just about the top 6 and media. Staying in the Prem is of upmost priority for quite a few clubs.

I would agree if it only were today's top 4-6 that stopped caring, but I'm worried more and more teams will care less and less, as finishing 2-3 positions higher on the table brings in more cash. Not to mention relegation candidates with thinner squads.

"Big clubs" was perhaps a bad choice of words on my part. I apologise, English is my second language. I was including clubs like Everton and Leicester in my thinking .Everton's ambition surely is top 6 this year, and top 4 eventually? What happens when you start to fight for those spots? You'll be in the same situation. I guess I'm just sick of this" top 4 over domestic cups"-mentality

It won't make any difference because we're crap in the cups now playing our full strength team mate.

I remember as a kid cup final day was very special.
Sit there swapping channels from ITV to BBC, stayed in all day watching the build up.
My dad would go the shop for chocolate and drinks and all kinds of stuff.
Cup final day was always sunny glorious weather, it was like God even knew how special it was.

Not sure what can be done but it deserves more I think

Can’t stand FA Cup weekends, they are almost as bad as international friendlies. They should just play the early rounds in midweek such is the lack of fecks given about the competition.

“Oh but the magic of the cup” - what magic is that then ? Bumblesquat FC getting bummed by a larger club 99% of the time ? Such magic...

The Cup was ace when we was kids, only 4 TV channels and Live football was at a premium. The start of the Premier League, Sky tv, the Champions League have all played a part in what it is today. Not to mention Man Utd swerving it that year. It’ seems to be devalued more each passing year. The Final kick off times, not making it THE final game of the season. It was played one year whilst there was Prem games on that afternoon. Sad really, but whilst the rewards of League placing, and actually staying in the Prem are so rewarding it will always be down the list of a few clubs for that reason, not to mention the big clubs, coming out of a very hectic Xmas period wanting to rest their best players. Unfortunately, the game is more about finance these days and the rewards for winning the Fa Cup aren't great. The winners got 3.6m on top of 3m for the run to the final. Brighton got 7.5m for just finishing 17th and 105m in total earnings due to TV etc. With the possibility of earning that again this season. To some fans the Cup is still great but to the owners of these clubs it's nothing. Nothing to do with 'the big 6 cartel and the media,' devaluing it. And everything to do with reward. Until that changes it'll continue to devalue year on year.

In the 1940's/50's, the FA Cup was the biggest competition. Bigger than the league. The winners of the cup were the number one. The league championship was almost a consolation prize.

This is absolutely true. I think the change came about in the mid-sixties (coincidentally around the time the RS won it for the first time). Match Of The Day turning up in 1964 on a Saturday night had a big impact in turning the league into the most important prize.

My solution would be to scrap replays altogether, scrap the League Cup and scrap semi-finals at Wembley. As the only domestic cup competition it would instantly gain more importance, people hate replays in January and the prize of reaching Wembley would be restored.

Apart from the demise of the FA Cup all's good in the modern game.

Blame uefa - they stole the limelight when they opened the European Champions cup up to (mainly) runners up, devaluing it but also opening up more revenue streams from the stupid. It also devalued the uefa cup and destroyed the cup winners cup - but that didn't matter since they ended up with more paying armchair viewers of whatever game was on the box.

Simple solution. Make the European cup SOLELY a competition amongst champions, top 3 places are for UEFA cup only and if anyone else wants anyone shot at European glory go for a domestic cup.

It's like the old days. There's a lot of arrogance and self congratulation amongst my generation that the old days were something that needed to be changed but in many cases they're utterly wrong. Why change a time proven successful formula?

Oh right .... individual wealth.
There was a nice variety to the old European competitions. Now it is just a boring mess dominated by the same 4-5 sides

It is amazing - it is getting to the stage where I despise football, though I still like watching the games. But even that is getting ruined by VAR, a gimmick for the TV audiences

Personally, I'm a big fan of the League Cup. It's unpretentious. Teams are expected to field a few youngsters and benchwarmers.

With the FA Cup there's a deal of mainly BBC hype about what a huge event it is and when it comes to match day there are a ton of "injury" call-offs.

My local team, Maidenhead United, played in the very first FA Cup competition in 1871. They had a local derby against Marlow and won 2 - 0. I think Royal Engineers won the first one. Played for Maidenhead in the late 1960's / early 1970's. Their ground at York Road is the oldest 'continuously used' ground in the world, though there are all sorts of similar claims made. Hallam, (played against them on that ground) in Sheffield, claim to have the oldest ground in the world, but I think there were spells when it wasn't used. Probably used for skiing in the winter as it had quite a slope from goal to goal.

I prefer the league cup now, i think one reason is the semi final, that Wembley stuff is nonsense, a 2 leg home and away is much better
