Old school. He didn't engage in idle banter on the job. Mind you those were the days before TV put a pundit in the commentary box. One man described the action, or just let the action speak for itself.

Pundits not needed when a commentator had the talent to hold an audience.... or in the days when the game was interesting.

He was just good at his job. Knew when to talk and when not to. Universally liked by all fans and never accused of bias. Again, just a master of his craft. Sad loss.

A really sad day for true soccer fans. He was the last of the Corinthians as regards commentators.

I agree with you on the above although Coleman could irritate a bit when his jingoism got the better of him during Ingerland matches.
