….the stats are remarkable;

382 goals in 579 club games
13 goals in 12 England U23 games
44 goals in 57 England games.

A bit like Fred Pickering being left out the ‘66 FA Cup Final, Greaves lost his place through injury to Geoff Hurst and couldn’t reclaim it for the World Cup final. Pictures of him at the end wearing his suit in conversation with Alan Ball.
Although he is 4th in the list of England's top goalscorers, his goals-to-games ratio easily puts him top...

…I think Rooney broke Charlton’s record, he got 53 goals (nice that a local lad and former Everton player tops the list), but as you say, Greaves’ ratio is phenomenal.

Never saw him play 'live' but saw him in TV games many times. The best goal poacher who ever played. I remember one game when he was running with the ball just outside the penalty area. A defender came in to tackle and Greavsie flicked the ball onto the defenders shin pads picked up the rebound and went on to score. Don't think playing a 'one/two' off a defenders legs was ever in the coaching manual.
RIP.

…..those of us who had the pleasure of watching him play were very fortunate. Successfully fought his demons off the pitch and was a natural for TV, but we will remember him most for those dazzling runs and the deft finishes inside the post.

Respect for a truly top player.

One of if not the best finisher I ever had the pleasure of watching. Brave, quick, intuitive and rarely needed a second bite at the cherry.
RIP Jimmy Greaves - Simply the best.
