I believe that I really did hate St.John (and Shankly, and big Ron) back in the day, but of course it stemmed purely from the fact that they represented 'them'. Obviously it was nothing personal, how could it be? I never knew any of them.
As I matured I held a grudging appreciation of them all.
Genuinely sorry to hear of his death.

He wasn’t a hard man to like.

....just remembered Ian St John’s wife had a hairdressers shop on Walton Road, not far from Goodison near Blair Hall. I’m sure it was called ‘Betty St John’s’ & some of the older posters on here might remember it. Much different to WAGs of today.

remembering a song that began "oh we hate St John and...." but that's about it. Loved S&G when I was younger, was it the first footy show where the banter was as key as the footage?
He always seemed like a man who did not take himself too seriously. I appreciate that in a person.
Cannot believe he went before the Lizard Prince - it must have been his final goal..... They seem to be of different generations! makes you admire the achievement of His Royal Dryness.

Thats correct, near to where the Iceland & Aldi shops are now. My Dad was a mechanic and used to fix/service St John's car, said he was a nice bloke.
