The Crowd

As I said, The thread is on atmosphere and the crowd, it would be remiss to not discuss the significant change in dynamic from season ticket holders.

If the consensus is the atmosphere isn't what it was, then there's a debate as to whether a significant (talking 12k) increase in fans being season ticket holders is a factor. These fans, myself included tend to "go through the motions" with perhaps less sense of occasion. Take Leicester, there were a few empty seats because season ticket holders decided not to attend/couldnt resell. There was also over 1,000 tickets before the game on StubHub.

I think apathy/self loathing from mid table obscurity and the over commercialism of Premier League football are bigger reasons but each play a part.
To be fair me and my best friend planned on being in our seats for Leicester... But it didn't turn out like that.

Abomination that on NYD we kick off at 12.30 if I'm honest.

I'd likely be sat in silence like everyone else. It doesn't hide the fact that it's awful. What gets me is the absence of any noise whatsoever. Even if I could, I wouldn't buy a season ticket because it just looks like a boring experience.

It isn’t silent when we play well, though. Yet people on here moan about the atmosphere and do nothing to contribute to it.

If you want the team to be supported by a bunch of super bloos who sing when we are losing 6-2 to Spurs, then get yourself to the game and make a difference.

A weird observation I make is how good celebrations in the Street End used to look regardless of the game. Limbs absolutely everywhere. Looks nothing like that now.
There's been a few times this season where it resembled its old self (ending up a few rows in front or on your backside) but you're right, often it's not like that now.

However, I do feel that the season ticket issue, which may hold weight in other parts of the ground, probably doesn't apply to the Street End - or not as much.

Where I sit, there's a great community of fans who talk to each other, happy to sing and can go mental; however, the atmosphere around the ground is so mute.

Others feel the same who sit in other parts of the Lower or Upper Gwladys Street when I speak to them, but when there is singing it isn't reciprocated throughout.

So now you can feel it when you walk towards the ground, walking up the back steps and taking your seat: the intensity has gone and it is just flat.

It's a real shame as Goodison could be so intense - almost vile - and it was a great tool for us against opposition. "The Street End will suck the ball in the net?" No.

What I'd give for the old terrace, the Street End from the 90s and early 2000s, like it was against Manchester United and Fiorentina or even Moyes last few years.

It wouldn't make a difference. It'd take a change in the whole culture of the ground. Maybe a few close FA Cup ties at home will help bring some atmosphere back.

United 04/05, Fiorentina and Liverpool FA Cup are the games that always stick out in my mind. I feel like there's probably a lot of people at the game now who have never been part of something like those nights which is a shame. In defence of our fans those games were all huge, as a club we haven't had a big match for what feels like years now.

Even Moyes last game against West Ham was brilliant. Goodison was rocking that day.

The epitome of that vile atmosphere was when some no mark from Birmingham went down feigning injury with about 5 minutes to go. The ground erupted, venom being spewed from everywhere. Needless to say we went and scored a couple and won 3-1. We need moments like that. It's what going the game is all about.

I got a season ticket three years ago I think and best atmosphere I can remember is vs Chelsea in the FA cup when we won 2-0 and Rom scored a corker. It was rocking then.

Weirdly the game this season that most reminds me of that is when we beat Palace. That was a tough game and when we finally scored the stadium really erupted. Probably shows how bad it's been if that's a highlight really.

Also the City 4-0 when Davies scored his Roy of the Rovers goal was another highlight of my admittedly bleak tenure as a season ticket holder

the trouble with anticipating "a big match" is that our players get wind of that anticipation....and crumble under the pressure. And the match becomes no longer "big".
It's a very vicious circle and it epitomises the concept of 'Everton that'

Yeah, I was just thinking about that game. Possibly Williams against Arsenal in Koeman's first year as well. I'm probably being harsh on the fans really. Most of it is down to the players who have served up some of the most boring seasons in our history.

Because people just don't talk as much anymore let alone chant. Bet you find most fans are either on Facebook, Twitter to vent or cheer...last time I went to a game a shouted "come on you blues" and fans actually turned round to see who was disturbing the peace. I didn't rally cry again. It's just not cool to cheer at goodison anymore unless a goal goes in. It's a sad time and I blame social media for it all.

World is becoming a depressing place isn’t it? Last time I went I got evils for screaming at the linesman, used to shout for every throw , corner etc but like you say social media etc and lefties and hipsters are taking over and now you have to watch the game through your phone camera and post about it until a goal goes in, it’s changed a lot , I remeber the standing sections , I couldn’t see the pitch most of the time as I was like 10 but the noise and atmosphere was 100x better

This. There are still days and games when the passion on the pitch is reflected by our home fans greatly. I can't speak in comparison to the 'good old days' but still.

All home fans are the same anyway. I went to old Trafford and didn't hear a peep from them until they went 2 up

Definitely. You get yourself settled in thinking it could be a special game and we are 2-0 down within 10 minutes. This current group of players are the weakest in my life time.

I know the relegation teams of the 90s were poor but that was down to them being crap at football. Could you imagine this lot going 2-0 down to Wimbledon? Pack up and go home.
