And by how effective, I mean you can't replace striking firemen, police, nurses, train drivers with scabs generally.

No need to. Cos its a stupid, appeal to the red meat brigade, law. Like the lad said above, I struggle to think of many jobs that can be replaced by agency workers, cos they exist to top up short term staff issues or as a working preference, and dont have the numbers to replace a striking workforce.
Police can’t strike, nurses won’t strike, as for the other two all that’s needed is for enough scabs to work and keep a much reduce service going to put the remaining work force under pressure to return to work, something I’m all to well aware of.

Change the FPTP voting system to something more representative.
All they will do on the rail is put an orange jacket on and say there are no trains , it takes years, months to train drivers, route leaning ect and signal men, never mind all the other jobs,
Good luck doing that on a Saturday night in Liverpool they will be getting filled in every other day.
The union movement and Labour should organise a boycott of any firm using them.

As I said all that’s needed is for a significant number of the work force to carry on working to undermine the strike ( miners strike point in case ), and that month to train a driver will certainly drop. Do not underestimate the lengths a government will go to to break a strike. As for your assessment of scabs couldn’t agree more.
A populist, token gesture and no more. What, are they going to get thousands of temporary police, nurses, teachers, train drivers etc?? Like hell they are. Yet still the sheep will fall for it.
