Current Affairs The Conservative Party

As an ex-pat Northamptonian I can confirm that Northamptonshire County Council has been a basket case for a long time, however, it has been Conservative-controlled for the last 13 years. Nothing cross-party about it.

Corby has had problems since the steelworks shut, so will be hit particularly badly.

It's another example of how poor the country is at revitalising communities who had a huge employer like that shut down for whatever reason. Suffice to say, I don't want to Brit-bash unnecessarily, as I'm not sure many other countries do it all that well either.

Corby was that bad an example of post-industrial policy failure that they used to teach it at GCSE level.

I did some work there at the start of my career, and it is a rather unloved town (even by its residents)

A lot of those places are - look at Shotton for example (which was the worst single-day layoff in British history and which probably wasn't taught at GCSE because it was so close to home).

Still, at least if the Brexiteers get their way the children of the future will be taught about Broughton and Airbus rather than Corby and British Steel.

PS - the link between poor public health and inequality is overwhelmingly established among the scientific community . Reducing inequality and restoring public investment should be the FIRST point of any discussion of how to improve the efficiency of the NHS.

It might make us feel to better to bathe in our own sanctimony, shaming and sneering at the desperate choices that desperate people often make, like we're Mark Corrigan or some parody Dickens villain, but this sort of comment is of no relevance to any grown-up public policy discussion, and is best left to those applying to write editorials for the S*n.

Beyond moral shortcomings, the failure to grasp the causal links between poor health and austerity/inequality reflects basic scientific illiteracy.

As a socialist Joe, there must be something inside you that thinks "this is wrong" when so many people you must absolutely detest think that Brexit is the way ahead for this country.
Bruce I am a democrat the vote was for out - by a high turn out........
Labour to renationalise will need to out of the EU properly .......
A deal will get done imo WTO will hurt them also.......

Apparently Boris won't apologize for his bank robber and letter box jibe towards some female Muslims, did not take long for the Steve Bannon effect to filter its way to Boris leadership and Brexit dreams. Boris and Bannon and some dog whistling politics, what else was going to happen.
