I'm less staggered by any personal values we may or may not have, and figure that if we're relying on politicians to show moral virtue we might be waiting a long time, but there has been quite belligerent defence of the apparent nuance of campaign tactics, such as the £350m advert, used by Johnson et al, when there is a growing mountain of evidence not only of his dishonesty but his willingness to do whatever it takes to further his own career. Despite all of that, there is a belief that they weren't lied to by a man whose sole interest was furthering his own career. I know there are a whole bunch of psychological quirks that distort both our perceptions and our decision making, but I reckon people could make a career out of chronicling the mental gymnastics some are pulling to portray the current situation as one that is going just according to plan.
