I just hope, in vain most likely, that the folk who empowered this stuff, wake up before its too late.

It started with "Take back control" "Enough is enough",and we warned them what the real end game was. France got a lucky escape last week. But I despair, cos the nationalist rhetoric is so easy to absorb. And that is good people, who dont know what they have done.

Not exactly the thread for it, but noticed that the bill around voter ID went through, requiring ID for all elections after next week‘s one.

Interestingly (at least to me), just scrolling Twitter and socials to judge the reaction (not representative, I know), there was a large number talking about how this will put a stop to Labour stealing elections via fraudulent voting, and pointing to postal voting as the next thing to ban to prevent more election fraud by Labour.

I know we tend to follow the US with these things, but this was quicker than I thought. Expect the next General Election could be a fighting ground of claims of stealing the election, and whether politicians lean into that to exploit it, as our US cousins did, will be interesting to see.

Claims of 'stealing elections' might have more credibility if the party accused of stealing those elections hadn't been out of power for the past 12 years.

Well, yeah, I thought that. But I don’t think logic or reason or evidence mattered much over the pond, and can’t help fearing the worst after seeing the numbers of those spouting this bullsh!t.

There’s a lot of pro-Trump, QAnon-circling folk in this country who’ve bought into the election fraud theories.

This is all part of modern conservatism. Nothing will improve until people stop voting for them and they are turfed out of office. If you vote for the Tories at the next election you will get more of the same.
