Smith certainly would have won 1997, there was just a massive surge for change...it's more uncertain if he would have won 2 more elections after that...

I think I agree. My Nana for example was a Thatcher voter but she told me (at the time John Smith was still alive) that she liked him, and for my Nana that normally means she'd have voted for his party. I think quite a few people voted more for the personality & oratory skills of the leader rather than for loyalty towards a party. Probably also why Blair got in and why Miliband couldn't.

Honestly baffles me that a single person is a Tory, let alone how they keep winning elections.

Investigators are probing how a young mum died in her freezing home after her benefits were stopped because she was too ill to attend a meeting.

Elaine Morrall could not afford to pay for heating so, according to her mum Linda, she switched it off and only turned it back on when her four children came home from school.

The 38-year-old, who had been battling depression and an eating disorder, and had recently been in hospital in intensive care, had wrapped herself in her coat and scarf indoors.

Today, Cheshire Police said they had attended Ms Morrall’s address in Boston Avenue, Runcorn , following reports of a sudden death and found Ms Morrall’s body.

Detectives say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Ms Morrall’s death, and a file has been prepared for the coroner.

Cheshire coroner’s office said an inquest was yet to be opened.

The ECHO understands the cause of Ms Morrall’s death was not immediately obvious, and more tests and checks will be carried out to establish how she died.
