Are they going to do the London/Birmingham bit first, then the Birmingham/Manc/Leeds bit after? Why not start the two links at the same time, then have a party in Birmingham?
Yeah the initial bit is London to Crewe now followed by the two extra parts. I assume that it’s being done in phases to balance the costs (especially of purchasing land) and because of a lack of contractors actually able to do the job.

Linking the north with Birmingham first would be a bridge to far, the Tories got the vote and now blowing raspberries, true to form.

HS2,has always been a two phase scheme. By the sounds of it there’s going to be more thinking about how to link into existing lines to actually reap the benefit. Also of note in that is that phase one will now also include the Crewe terminus, rather than being in phase two. That means the NW gets benefits earlier than expected. Presumably, that’s a reward for voting Tory rather than return the god awful ex-Labour MP.
This about London and London only... Spin it all you like. They should be connecting the north up first if there was any real substance to their Northern power house danglies.

What are the Tories doing first with this mansion tax and now hs2.

Boris getting his second term sorted already.
Just like Northern train connectivity thats very much under review. lol
Anyone, needing northern transport will be at least 20 years behind Birmingham, personally it's good news for me, but if I was still up north I would be very very angry.

TBF if they had any understanding of what high speed rail is meant to be it would avoid Birmingham altogether, have one stop in the North (and that would be an out of town station, probably near York) and then continue on to Edinburgh.

As an opponent of Tory ideology this project is a perfect tool. Watch the cost spiral now once Johnson gives it the go ahead.. Also it sets an awful precident some ten years over due, so already behind time, cost going up after each Tory review. HS1.4 is the bar and will be wheeled out as an excuse for other failing spiralling projects. This will weigh heavy on Johnson.

Yep, as someone who travels from Liverpool to Barrow every other weekend I'm fuming over this, but not surprised at all.

The 'northen powerhouse' is completely dead with this. Will be 20 years before we see the benefits of it up here and we have our hands tied behinds our backs voting this through as it's the only chance we will see any improvements to our network links up here.

Nobody cares about HS2 up here. We want improvements to our local and regional lines.

Either the north get hs2 or they get money to improve their rail
