The thoughts of being in my 70’s doing 2 hours daily commuting on overpacked, standing room only trains (AI no driver) then weaving through the inert sleeping bag corpses and avoiding the junky zombies, gangsters and dodgy yoof to get to my soul crushing entry level pay grade job as the service officer giving directions to the relevant hatches in a local social welfare office.... all to keep me living like a lord in my rented bed sit with my teabags and kettle, an old radio playing nostalgia like 2unlimited, west life and one direction, and possibly one of them Sony robot dogs for company whilst I gaze at a piece of coral set in a glass ball...

‘here comes a candle to light you to bed,
And here comes a chopper to chop off your head!’

But it's better for your mental health mate, didn't you know?

And don't worry about that young lad who would have taken your job, there'll be millions more jobs created out of thin air by Boris.

It'll probably pay for a Tory caused Brexit. So yet again the commoner pays for the absolute idiots running the country. And yet some people will try and justify it and warn people how dreadful Corbyn is.

You didn't answer my question earlier. There are twice as many people on the planet as in 1970, so if there are only 3.7 billion jobs available (as per the population in 1970), then surely 3.7 billion would be in a whole lot of bother, but of course that's utter nonsense. Or the 11 million extra people in Britain over the same timeframe. Heck in 1911 there were around half as many people in Britain as now, there must be some 30 million people unemployed as no new jobs can possibly be created. That something that was disproven 120 years ago still gets trotted out with such confidence is a rather depressing indictment of our education system.

They even have a section about the early retirement myth in the above article, as though someone just out of school is going to take the job of a retiree who has quite probably reached a senior status in their chosen career. Corbyn should retire now and stop blocking the chances of a 20 year old being Labour leader, coz that's how it works. *sigh

Incidentally, this underlines the absurdity of simplistic labeling, as the whole 'they took our jobs' narrative is used by many Brexiters to stop/reduce immigration, so are you blokes using the same rhetoric about pensions/retirement all diet Tories?

You've already assured me there'll be jobs Bruce so didn't feel I needed to answer that question. Have you thought about how your body and mind eventually starts slowing down and expecting people to work into their mid 70's might actually not be feasible for a lot of those people. What will you do for those people?

I'd remove labour laws and silly h+s and work them into ground.

As I said previously, we (royal we) need to have a fundamentally different conversation about ageing in a healthier way. Life expectancy is going up, so we can't pretend it isn't. People like Lynda Gratton (she has a book if you're interested http://www.100yearlife.com) have done things on it, but there's been precious little from government, and frankly I'm not sure throwaway remarks such as those made by @orchard are that helpful to the debate (yet I've no doubt remarks like them will be made by our political class).

Life expectancy has gone up, so we cant pretend it will continue to.

Its my demographics soap box, I know, but imo, for the first time ever, the grandchildren of the current grandparents will have a lower life expectancy than them.
I wouldnt say 'ever' like, but for a long bloody time i reckon.
