I hope @peteblue has taken note of this following his put down of modern teachers.

I think Pete to be fair doesn't mean anything nasty by it, he just has a different viewpoint which is fair enough. I have even forgiven Michael Gove (you realise with time forgiving is an important process to help you move forward). |

I think he had a vision of education that in many ways was a very positive one, one which worked for him, but ultimately one which is completely unworkable on any kind of grand scale. When that happens you either reverse direction or you end up with all sorts of pressures and obscurations to try to make black seem like white, which is where we ended up. I was a consequence of that as were lots of others (when an idea is wrong it's easy to blame the tools implementing it). I don't think his desire was to punish or make people miserable, but his idea waste utopian.

Some would say probably similar to what happened in the Soviet Union, a great idea that wasn't workable and to try and make it such caused great pain (obviously on a different scale!).

The problems are trifold that are creating these conditions - obviously the big one is austerity which has had all the directly linkable effects - bigger classes, less resources etc. There’s also teachers having to pick up non classroom stuff due to the cuts to social workers - recently a Friend of the family who’s a teacher had to attend a child custody hearing to give evidence on a girls welfare, she noted that years ago that would have been a social workers job.

Secondly, there’s a huge philosophical sh*tstorm going on within education that’s really creating problems. ‘The way to teach’ shifts from week to week depending on what’s popular on social media - one week it can be learning by doing is the definite way to go, then the next week kids should be dictating what lessons should look like. I know when I worked as a lecturer we had to attend CPD on 'Learning Styles' which less than six months later was thoroughly debunked as biggest load of garbage going. So teachers have plenty of garbage thrown at them without it ever really being tested. There are still professional development companies pedalling out Dweck's garbage for christsake, which teachers are then scrabbling to implement The classroom seems to be this mixing pot of political, untested academica and ideological garbage that comes out with teachers unable to develop their own style and doesn't do anyone any favours.

Finally, teachers themselves - I know plenty of teachers, but only one went to university first time round to actually study teaching. The rest are johnny come latelies riding in on PGCE's after either flunking their bachelors degree to the point it's useless, or generally being unsuited to work in industry so end up teaching - 'Those that can't, teach' was a pretty common mantra round universities when I was finishing degrees. There needs to be something that pulls people in to education and that's clearly missing in this country at present - it needs to be far less politicised for one.

Good post mate. On your first point without funding whats been found is New Labours much heralded "multi agency" consensus has really frayed at the edges. It's a great shame as this was one of the great things they introduced and we are starting to see the consequences of letting it drift away with a lot of the knife crime stuff currently.

The obvious difficulty is that you have a multitude of different ideas on teaching which then have to be refracted first through the gaze of a political class who are completely self serving and then through a teaching profession who are for the most part completely anti-intellectual in their outlook. Whether sinister or not, it means most of the best research around teaching is ignored and fads are often what is favoured. People also seem to love fans and acronyms.

When I did the job "quality first teaching" was the big thing. This would be the answer to everything. I suspect within a year a new magic bullet would be arrived at. It's the product fundamentally misjudging what good teaching in a northern European country would look like in the 21st century. Instead we've had a weird mix under the Conservatives of the abstract intellectual rigour of the Public school system being suggested (with some egalitarian language adopted) mixed with bits of the old gradgrindian knowledge approach mingled in. It just doesn't really connect with whats required in the context of today.

I agree on the final point. The teachers who did 3-4 years and really wanted to do it generally did better. When you look at Germany, or Finland and other such places where the education is good the profession is seen in a much higher light and they take CPD more seriously. In all honesty getting people in at the end of degrees has done an awful lot of damage. I understand the idea of getting "experts" in but in truth being knowledgable about a subject area is very little guarantee at being able to communicate that knowledge in a manner that helps others learn. If there was a correlation at all I would say it's the opposite process. There is an art to teaching, beyond just knowing lots of stuff and telling people what you know.

As a final aside it's a great shame much of the half baked ideas around teaching are making their way up to HE. The whole process is meant to be different and of course you are not meant to be teachers, so I've always found that bizarre. The opposite process is probably needed and the TEF stuff needs to go!

Vocation? Dangerous talk and something that's not acceptable anymore, all that matters is the appropriate certificate.

Anyway, if May continues as leader, the conservatives are finished. Myself and all of our pub are conservative voters, but everyone will vote for the Brexit party. I know it’s only a small sample, but it will be repeated nationally. We cannot abide people who tell lies, and we have been lied to in respect of no deal is better than a bad deal. May no longer can be trusted to tell the truth, and the dogs breakfast of her negotiated deal shows that she is not really up to the job.....
