Isnt that the bloke who is/was a High Court judge, and has had his fill of accused getting off on technicalities due to rushed, but well intentioned, legislation? As such he routinely "objects" to tons of bills, ensuring they become watertight when on the statute book.
That's what i thought too, although i doubt he's consistent.

Not really one for 'scummy' monikers, but Christopher Chope surely applies. Blocked a bill today to outlaw female genital mutilation.

Buzzfeed and the campaigner come off a bit worse for wear there. As @roydo pointed out, Chope does this to anything that seems to get rushed through on a ‘topic of the day’ style private member bill. We can’t complain that we want Parliament to be more open and honest then in the next breathe be critical of politicians actually asking to debate and contextualise what passes through.

I'm sorry, what?

We're talking about an MP holding up legislation against people taking photos up somebody's skirt, aren't we?

Do we know if he applies similar rigour to other topics or just a certain kind?

Which again, was a rushed through private members bill that was the hot topic of the week. The problem is that when things get rushed through, the ts aren’t crossed and some lawyer gets to keep a scumbag out of prison. Get it done properly

To make sure that it becomes more straightforward to convict people/remove potential loopholes.

Isnt that more sensible?

Voted against equal rights for gay people; voted against same sex marriage; voted against the hunting ban; voted against laws to promote equality and human rights; voted against a right to remain for EU nationals already in living in the UK; voted for a reduction in spending on welfare benefits

Lets be honest, he's a right charming focker.

Not going to pretend I had even heard of him till recently, but what the last few years has taught me is not to place too much validity on blunt "he voted against XYZ" issues without knowing the context behind why he did.

Gay marriage may be a long held religious belief. Fox hunting may be a big deal in his area. Or maybe the bills he voted against were poorly executed. The fox hunting one deffo was for example.

Point I am making, is that someone on Twitter who is politically opposed to someone can, and do, take random single acts and use them to attack someone. It happens with regularity to Corbyn across parts of the media.

Not really sure he can be defended tbh.

I havnt defended him. Other than to say that he has form for objecting to bills to ensure the resulting legislation is strong.

If he is actually pro FGM, then he is obviously an odious worm. If he wants to ensure a "One line ammendment" to existing legislation makes it less likely an accused can get off on a technicality, perhaps less so.

Seeing that there's been a total of ONE successful prosecution since the original anti-FGM bill was passed about 25 years ago, I'd say the current legislation urgently needs revision.

He was wrong in all of that but his point of making sure future legislation is fully discussed before being given assent is right in my book. Too often bills are voted through without MPs, and the public, being in possession of all of the facts.

He failed to object to two similar bills proposed by his mate Peter Bone.
