On "Wake up to Money" this morning, an expert in tax asked the question - why was Zahawi's fine so low. Apparently if a tax "error" involves offshoring, the fine is up to 200% of the tax owned, Zahawi paid just 30%...

I'm guessing because Zahawi negotiated that his crime was due to "carelessness" rather than intentional.

Does anyone other than HMRC believe this...? Indeed, I doubt HMRC actually believe this either, but he was their boss at the time this deal was negotiated, so normal rules you and I adhere to most likely did not apply.

tory toss wipe on QT talking up an investigation into zahawi. What about the song and dance of the sue gray report? has anyone seen it? the report into covid fraud, anyone seen that? remember the met police? they've fined boris once for one covid breach, they've evidence of five breaches. I know they've a lot on their hands but what message to the country when the rule makers are the rule breakers...

I don't disagree with him, but why on earth would you invite Rod Stewart to give his opinion on politics? Ffs, invite some actual experts on the topic on rather than some celebrity bellend.

This is the argument advanced (since the divorce) every time he gets one of these loans or donations though, and as mentioned above he has just got another million donation on top of his speaking engagements, plus advances and royalties for books delivered (and not delivered), journalistic income and his actual wage.

He doesn't spend his money on cars, homes (the Bamfords have loaned him two of theirs), smart clothes, expensive tech or indeed anything obvious that might explain why he burns through so much money (that renovation of no.10 for example cost under £120000 and the state probably paid 25% of it). There is not much evidence that he has accumulated any assets or savings of any other kind, and even his numerous holidays often turn out to be donations or one kind or another. In fact I'd bet Carrie has more assets than he does and has done so throughout their relationship (the fight remember was in her flat when he'd ruined her things).

From his reported income, Johnson should not need this much support - but he does. IMHO he either has a much more expensive family situation (we know of at least one kid who he is probably on the hook for a five figure monthly sum plus public schools fees for) or he is an addict of one kind or another (gambling being the traditional one for a layabout toff of course).

There is a good comparison to be made with Blair, who also received a lot of money via means often questionable after leaving office. Even with the opaque nature of his accounting, you can see what Blair has done with the money (invested it in property or put offshore mostly).

To be fair, on receipt of any loot, Bozo's first question was, "what would Everton do?"

Also a smarter person would make a link to a large horde of useless number 10s.
