Anyone who voted tory at the last election basically voted for: more food banks and further unprecedented surge in homelessness.

It's just a bonus for them that they got all this other crap that's come along now.
Harold McMillan Conservative PM 1959(?) wth, iirc, a sizable majority.

Reporter; Prime Minister, what can stop your new Govt. carrying out its policies?

PM; Events dear boy, Events .

True then, even truer now...and you have to admit in the last 5 yrs or more, we've had 'Events' off the scale.

*Goes into Harry Turtledove / the screen goes all wavey mode.
Our man on the mythical Mr Average man on the Clapham Omnibus votes for Boris in 2017 to Get Brexit Done
Imagine Brexit works after a fashion,
No Covid, no Ukraine and thus no gas crisis,
Different ball game.
The possibilities are endless.

Keep those mental gymnastics flipping, oh beautiful finish on the mat. Good people on both sides blah blah blah

The economy is not wrecked. We had problems with the £ and Gilt %. They will resolve themselves. The U.K. economy is fine and growing. The only thing that will slow it down is union strikes and the BBC and co trying to run us down. The government is screwed, Truss made a mess of the mini budget, but where were the permanent secretaries within our rolls royce civil service who advise them. A lot has gone wrong but it can all be fixed…..
I would imagine the UK is currently similar to Australia in that we actually have 2 economies.

One is for the well off and the very wealthy, which is ticking along just fine and profits are very healthy, thanks for asking.

The other economy is for people that require food banks, live in their cars, or if they are lucky enough to find a home which has affordable rent, have to choose between heating their home and feeding their children. That economy ain't doing so well.

You're talking about the first one, aren't you?

Reading the last 30 pages of this thread this morning and @peteblue you sound completely brainwashed. I know a few Tory lads and they are either keeping their head down or as dumbstruck as everyone else watching this unfold.

Your reaction is unbelievable to the point that I actually don't believe you. I think you're on the wind up and you've caught a fair few in your net tbh.

Tbf @degsy, everyone 'gets' that events have been extraordinary. It's the response and behaviour of the Tories that is the issue. Won't go into the whole Brexit shenanigans but the narrative that they handled COVID well is a lie. It was shocking - nevermind Johnson's lies and huge backhanders to mates. Then 'events' didn't make Truss crash the economy.

If we're dreaming, how about a dream where the government actually cares about someone other than the rich and the privileged?

He's just a bellend.

They fired the civil servant who called it out as madness.

Gordon Brown screwed the U.K. pensions, he screwed the U.K. telecoms industry and opened it to China, he wasted money like it was going out of fashion, and then before being thrown out of office raised the top rate of tax to 45% as a bear trap for the Tories, his scorched earth approach is what Cameron and Osborne had to deal with. The man was a disgrace….

Gordon Brown hasn't been prime minister for 12 years!

I'm not being horrible mate, but you predicted Donald Trump would win, and Johnson would not be deposed. So I'll trust my own judgement on what events may or may not happen.

It's a poor look to crow over peoples misery too. Unnecessary.

Nail on the head, especially the last part.

Not going to lie, @peteblue got under my skin a bit with the odious 'suck it up, buttercup' nature of that post.

Yet the economy had 12 years of growth, and was in recovery when the Tories took over, with a deficit far below what we currently have.

So if he was bad, the tories are multiples worse.

I have no dog in the fight. But Labour run the economy far better than the tories.

The 45% tax rate came far too late to make any difference as well. It needs to be far higher. The rich get away with paying far too little tax, while ordinary hard working Joe's like me are pummeled by Tory taxation. Let them lay their way a bit for once. I'm sick of having to bail them out.

Of course not, but this is not just the U.K. even though everyone likes to think it is….

Well the UK is the worst. I understand the concept global.ecnomic challenges Pete. There I always a crisis in the world somewhere.

The previous 10 years saw huge growth, and we didnt capitalise on that with our sluggish growth.

We then hit turbulence, and we again are the worst hit.

Eventually it Dawn's on people, that we are being governed badly.

I listen to the government and it really is a case of always the victims, it's never their fault.

Gordo Brown as chancellor also delivered more growth than any of the last (I cant remember how many theyve had) chancellors. The deficit was lower and the country was in a comparatively decent state.

Inflation was low. Gilts were under control. The pound was stronger.
It's just a demonstrated fact that the left delivers more growth than the right in the US and the UK. This is because they do more to block economic rents (though they are also fairly in bed with big donors) and hand out less corporate welfare.
