As has been said below, does it have to be either or? It's well documented that significant gaps in your CV are extremely harmful to your job prospects, so it seems to make sense to work whilst retraining if at all possible.

And to be fair, that is something that is being examined at the moment. I think it's called the Good Jobs Commission or something of that nature. The government entrusted the RSA with looking into it.

Thats fair enough on their part. And I support them looking into it. I think that shows it's possible, and as with all governments or agencies they should be measured against doing this.

It could be very easily solved by putting minimum wage at a rate that allows people the ability to feed their kids and putting in secure working conditions. There's no great mystery in how to solve the issue. It's ultimately a question of motivation.

The windbag truly is a waste of space.

Meanwhile, underneath the railways:

Network Rail has sold its railway arches to a pair of real estate investors as part of a £1.5bn deal and vowed that businesses working from the newly acquired spaces will be protected by a “tenants’ charter”.

Telereal Trillium and Blackstone Property Partners won the bidding for 5,200 properties, the majority of which are arches, the operator of Britain’s rail network said on Monday.

Network Rail’s property estate, most of which is changing hands in the sale, brought in revenues of £304m last year, turning a profit of £81m.

I will tell you for a fact that Network Rail was all but forced into selling these properties because of proposed changes to funding (including yearly rises).

Indeed.

One of the things that did my head in most about the commentary over the SNCF strikes earlier in the summer was how crowing about much debt they were in - over 40 billion euro, but that was with them owning everything (stations, trains, loads of land, various companies over here and across Europe). Network Rail is in even more debt and has nowhere near the same ability to get out of it as SNCF does.
