The bomb shelter thread.

Can remember a few years ago there was a pop up shop in my local shopping centre selling American chips and chocolates etc, i bought a few things to sample and every single one of them ended up in the bin after 1 bite. That hersheys chocolate in particular was utter filth.
I tried that once. It tasted like I'd been sick in my mouth. Horrible.

When stayed with friends in Queens (NYC), they said they would take us to 'Chinatown' in Manhattan for an 'amazing' Chinese.

Honestly, the stuff you go from the Ma Bo at 3am was better than there stuff. For all the talk about American food, I've always seen it as size over quality.
The one exception I found was Zabars in New York. What a place.
Now that's what you call a deli. Would happily sit and munch my way through their menu

….ha, ha. Whilst it doesn’t help that I’ve got a sore eye and for the last 11 days have had to lie on my right side for 50 out of every 60 minutes, i find @4737carlin Benitez posts particularly banal.

I apologise unreservedly for venting my frustration. Whilst it’s fine to disagree, it’s never right to be disagreeable.
Love it!! haha

Much less exotic than NYC but there are very few Chinese restaurants in County Durham. There's one that everybody raves about. I went with my friends it was a) extortionately priced and b) bang average. Your Ma Bo 3am reference fits perfectly here. They have no competition so there is nothing to judge it against.

Don't get me wrong, my original comment was a generalisation as there's been some great places I've ate in over in the US.

However, I don't get the mass appeal that it (US food) has because I found that most places are just okay with a selling point of the portions being huge.

The lack of competition is the big point in lots of remote places. @Kurt. may know about this, but there's meant to be a 'brilliant' Indian in Benllech (Anglesey).

In reality, it's bang average even compared to the places you'd just find on Smithdown Road here in Liverpool.

Couldnt agree more, stacks of food that tastes pretty average.
Smaller portions of higher quality is definitely the better option.
