Player Valuation: £70m
All day people around the world have been talking about last nights spectacle. And it was, regardless of what you think of ego players, if one side deserves to have a bit of swagger about them, it's Barcelona.

Anyway, looking at them as a football club, they took an Englishman as their founding father. A British person from the English game took football to them, and the rest as they say is history.

Of course they had some bad times, and Real Madrid are more than a bitter rival, they were their masters for some seasons. However, Barcelona now have a football club that is envied across the globe. Yes they have debt, but it's debt that is manageable and they are not really in any trouble. Even so, they don't really need to buy anybody. They have an academy chock full of talent.

Last night 9 players were from the Barcelona academy. The architects of the downfall of the great Mourinho and his millionaire footballers were 3 lads from the Barcelona academy. Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Is there a better midfield in the world today? Has there ever been? Most definitely up there.

What has this got to do with Everton? Well I look at Villa and Alves, and think great players they have spent money on - but they have so much talent that was nurtured from an early age, and that is something that can be developed at any football club in the world.

Including ours. If the clubs are willing to allow it to develop. Ok top coaches are required, but they cost a damn site less than £9m we dropped on an anonymous Russian.

We have top facilities, we are proven to have been able to develop some very good young talent. Should we as a football club be pushing for this kind of system of academy bred football team. Lads who have grown up together, and become successful together. It's really not a difficult concept to understand.

Hard work, years of investment, sure, patience would be required, but I would rather see an Everton team dominate Europe in 15 years time, than a side still banging on a glass ceiling.

Shoot me down if you like, it's what I come to expect, but is it really that much to ask? It kind of depends whether or not you want success now, or sustained success later?

I know people like Goat are willing to give Moyes the rest of the century to prove himself, and if he has a plan to develop the club from the academies up, then I'll get on board with that, I really will.

After last night im sticking a score on Real to win La Liga. Mourhino doesnt do second twice.

Well it's not about that. It's about if Everton play things the right way, they can develop a young side which improves alongside eachother through the age groups, and eventually forced it's way into the reckoning.

United did it years ago, surprised nobody has tried it since really.

Arsenal tried to buy young starlets, but he doesn't seem to have much of a defence, it's all fancy arse passing.

I would like to see Everton bring through a talented crop of youngsters. Develop them for the first team, and not to warm the benches.

Spanish clubs have the advantage of playing their B team in the league. Their young players get real game experience. They also buy up top youngsters from Latin American (like Messi) to move to Barcelona.

So yes I agree with you, but it's not an "apples to apples" comparison. Personally, I'm big time in favor of "growing your own".

Quick fixes though is what the Premier League is all about, it's who can buy the league first. Matter of time before City do it, and Spurs are also doing it to an extent.

I just loved the fact that there were 7 world class players out there who cost Barca not a penny in transfer fees, in other words Ronaldo cost more than their whole side. That to me is incredible.

Yeah the B team idea is superb, it's certainly what we should adopt over here. I keep hearing so-called experts salivating at the way Spain nurture their youngsters to develop technique. It's all about quickness of though, passing, moving, off the ball, working hard to recover possession, and as Koeman said it - making the right pass at the right time.

It's just football. That's all it is. Anybody can play it.

Its defo the way to go mate, i think that is the model we are trying to acheive i have great hopes for the likes of Barkley and Hope to name but a few. I think with Davey its always going to be a blend of expierence and youth to be honest, i cant see him taking a step back to take a step forward again by relying on yound players wholly.

I admire Wenger and his approach but then many would argue he just bullies smaller teams for smaller fees for younger players, in terms of attracting young talent or kids that come from poverty aorund the world, i dont really, but i know many do.

I admire the courage Roberto Martinez has shown at Wigan, hes blowen his entire budget on young talent over the past two seasons, given them games and tried to develop them as players and the oppurtunity to grow them as a team. In many ways hes braver then the likes of Wegner and Pep as he has more to loose then either, 50 odd million in Prem money, some courage in philosphey like!

Wolves?

Anyway, I see what your saying. I doubt Barcelona brought in 7 youngsters all at once, Xavi is getting close to 30 isn't he? The point is that:

Valdes
Puyol
Pique
Xavi
Busquets
Iniesta
Pedro
Messi

Bojan
Jeffren

All came through the academy.

At Everton this season we have:

Hibbert
Duffy
Osman
Rodwell
Barklay
Wallace
Vaughan
Anichebe
Agard
Baxter

In the first team squad who were developed in our academy. But not many of them are going to make it at the top level, mainly because we play experienced and probably less talented players instead. Likes of Heitinga instead of Rodwell. I would like so see more of them get a game.

I know people say Baxter is struggling, but he got a first team place, and Vaughan was shipped out on loan. He's either good enough, or he isn't. It's this kind of squad padding that Moyes is doing, it doesn't seem to have much of a plan.

Thats not remotly true.

Lets look at the most recent transfer window, he splurged £6 million on Boselli, probably the worst signing in the premiership this season.

He does not go for youth, look at the facts.

As for last nights game, real madrid tried to pressure the ball as individuals not as a team. If as a team they would have pushed up and pressured barca, they would have stifled them and put barca on the back foot.
Instead they tried to hold theire positions as a team with one man at a time going out of the formation to pressure/close down, it simply didnt work.

Barca's youth system draws in players from around the world. We haven't got that power of attraction.

Barca rely on massive multi-million £ signings too.

They're hardly our model to follow.

Tosh mate, they tried to play the offside trap and got caught every time. They tried to be clever and play a luxury player like Ozil where they should have anchored the midfield more, and as for Benzema, less said the better.

The problem with the B team is it turns the spanish lower leagues into a joke.
No promotions for certain teams, unfair advantage, lower standards, etc.

I recently heard a talk by they guy who is always on sky, he said it damages the spanish lower leagues.

The loan system is the best way to give youngsters a taste of first team football.
