Much as I'd love this to happen I just can't see it. English football as a whole sucks in terms of youth development, and we're not really any better than the rest. I think England has something like 1/3 the number of top qualified coaches as Spain does. Barca reap the benefits of a youth system they invest large sums into, much more than any English side. When you think they've lost the likes of Reina and Fabregas as well it is frightening. For what it's worth I don't think our problem is that youngsters aren't given first team experience, but more that they simply aren't talented enough. You only have to look at the shambles of a national team to see that. Our coaches aren't good enough and our kids aren't good enough.

I think we have the talent player wise...but they don't play regular high end football, they never play together apart from internationals every blue moon where the press destroy them.

People forget that the entire Spanish national side have mostly played together ever since they were 8 years old. The last English generation that did that were scholes, giggs, butt, Neville, beckham...and they won pretty much everything domestically.

Would you really trust someone with a plan that said, "Look, this will take 15-20 years to work, but when it works we will be the best team in the world"?

That's what Barca did, I can't see many Evertonians buying into that.

No I can't mate. Evertonians wan't success immediately, or there happy to have top 10 finishes. They see Man City and they wan't that.

Out of interest how long did it take Bill Shankly to go from div 2 to euro champions? I know it wasn't 15 years, but he had a plan, be nice to see that Moyes has one. At least that would be something.

He never made them European Champions.

Its also about the culture of the country- at the moment it feels like we are all ASBO's and playstation- I never see kids having a kick about these days, used to be on every street corner when I started playing.

In Spain- where ever you go you see kids playing out on designated parks and pitches. That is why as a country they are winning world cups and we are barely qualifying.

Its not just youth systems of clubs as I think ours is amongst one of the best in England but from the country too.

I agree that it's difficult to copy Barcelona (as they are not a club, they are an institution in Catalunya), but there smaller clubs which are setting a great example and don't have a bigger resources than us, for example Villarreal.
It's really decent article about them and how they are investing in their youth system, as well as they are promoting players through it - http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...rint-propelling-yellow-submarine-2132720.html

Yep, this is totally spot on, and it's getting worse.

Too many games to watch, too many games to play, too many fads to maintain.

As for Shankley, I stand corrected - but as if I study Liverpool's history in depth.

There would be nothing stopping it running concurrent with our current, dynamic attempt to be English Champions by 2012.

Nearly there lids.

Let's get this right, you would love us to be taken over by an arab who would put everything into the academy and keep the 1st team ticking over ?

so do I take it that you would be happy to spend your brass on watching a team that is ticking over ? and would not be crying out for the oil-rich arab to get his hand in his sky rocket and win us the league ?

Well it's not about that. It's about if Everton play things the right way, they can develop a young side which improves alongside eachother through the age groups, and eventually forced it's way into the reckoning.

United did it years ago, surprised nobody has tried it since really.

Arsenal tried to buy young starlets, but he doesn't seem to have much of a defence, it's all fancy arse passing.

I would like to see Everton bring through a talented crop of youngsters. Develop them for the first team, and not to warm the benches.

I think clubs like Barca, United etc hoover up talent at a very young age. We get the leavings though we don't do so bad with that!

Hopefully a silver lining of our current poor form will be the youngsters getting more of a chance.
