1) I was born a blue by my Grandfather and will always remain my little boy is also a blue
2) My family from Liverpool are split down the middle. My memory's of the story of the divide were my great grandfather took the boys all within similar age to an Everton vs RS game and they made they're minds up there and then. 2 went one way 2 were given a beating and got sent to bed with no tea

It's to do with Modern football really, my year of lads, it's more Everton than Liverpool but in the younger years it's Liverpool, United, Everton and Chelsea.

Struggling with the concept of United and Chelsea fans being tolerated in Kirkby. WTF is happening with that place ?

One of the things that pushed me away from the RS as a Superwool (Yank) is their association with the Boston Red Sox.

I'm a big baseball fan as well, and I generally find the Red Sox's habits of spending lots and lots and LOTS of money and not really getting much in the way of results (although they do occasionally win things, sometimes) pretty similar to a certain Liverpool FC. They're most definitely a part of the MLB equivalent of the Sky 4.

They also both have fanbases with massive 'diasporas' and an ancient stadium that's normally filled without out-of-towners, not to mention their fans always think their team is the best thing since bread, regardless of what the on-field product actually looks like.

(As a bone to throw to any Bawhston fans out there, I actually really enjoyed the 2013 Red Sox. Little in the way of ego on the team and a great storyline with all of the Boston Strong stuff. Was really fun to watch.)

I was born into a Blue family, but I now face the awful reality that two of my grandchildren will be raised as Reds because one of my girls was stupid enough to marry beneath her.

Worse still, he is a traitor to his own Dad who was a good Evertonian.

It was peer pressure for him, as he was at school up in the 70s when they were top dogs and his mates were all Reds.

I don't think in the 70s kids chose who to support on the back of success. The split then was 50/50 irrespective of who was doing best though that's not to say that the RS weren't getting the better attendances since they were much more successful. For me the real shift in favour of the RS locally has come only since the fluke in Istanbul. The nature of that triumph gave them a whole new dimension in winning the hearts and minds of the local youngsters and the populist 'support' of national and international glory seekers.

The split is, as pointed out by previous posters, very much a generational thing, with the imbalance most pronounced amongst the under 15s. In total I would say that the ratio is 55:45 against us in the city and surrounding region. That doesn't sound like much of a gap until you realise that that would mean them having approaching 25% more supporters than us. And that's a significant difference.
