The Best and Worst of the derby!

A good and bad derby all in one ninety minutes.

The Joe McBride, circa 1980.

Joe scored twice to put us two up inside the opening twelve or fifteen minutes or so.

I have never seen us start a derby like that, neither before or since.

I think it was Kenny pulled one back fairly quickly then Rushie equalised shortly after that.

2-2 at half time and it stayed that way :(

The best one for me was the Sharp Derby. Such an important away win in our penultimate title-winning season.

The worst one was Martinez's second 4-0 Derby defeat. Didn't they have something like 50 shots on target that night?

Doing something a little different here, an underrated and overrated.

UNDERRATED:
- Sharpy’s goal (it never gets old)
- The Kevin Ratcliffe goal in 86, hilarious that trickled in
- The Cadamarteri derby
- The Carsley derby
- Steve McManaman and Bruce Grobbelaar handbags

OVERRATED:
- The 3-3 derby, should have been a win
- Sheedy’s goal and V sign to the Kop, tremendous strike but the rest of the match was pretty awful

the Derbys were I went to the games before moving to RSA , mainly fond memories , with one loss , not a bad record !?

After That , watched a number on the telly unfortunaltely mainly bad memories

1978/79 - 1-0 Home Andy King - in the Gwladys Street brilliant - 1-1 away - King again equlalised
79/80 2-2 away - that was like a war ( on the field ) - we came back twice - home game 1-2 !
80/81 2-2 home - should have won - 2-0 up let the [Poor language removed] back in - Asa put us in front Joe Mc Bride 2-0 Daglish and Dare I say it a certain Sammy Lee equalised for the [Poor language removed]

I don't think that result was unexpected.

We were going well at the time, either top or very near the top of the league and had yet to lose a game that season :)

Yes, we hadn't beaten them for in seven years but nor had they beaten us to often during that run....there were a heck of a lot of draws in the 70s.

And the fatalism regarding the derby, so prevalent these days, had not taken root back then.
Erm, between our wins in 71 and 78 we played 15 times. 8 RS wins and 7 draws.

Nothing will ever top the 86 final, to have handed them the double the way we did, very nearly finished me as an Evertonian! Cried like a baby all the way back, horrible that was. I actually got sacked a week later because i snotted one of the 'never been to a match, but im a mad red' tosspots at work. Just couldn't take any more of the stick, so i introduced my forehead to his nose and that was it! Like i say, very close to binning Everton after that!

To make it even more annoying that was, despite their success, the only time they ever won 'the double'. They messed up against Wimbledon (Cup) and Arsenal (League) when they were nailed on.

My God you boys are digging up some awful memories for me that I'd buried deep down. McAlistair , clattenberg and the recent semi final are the worst for me.

They're bang out of order mate.

I'm just glad nobody has mentioned the Don Hutchinson, Graham Poll derby......

You're right mate, became a double winning side purely because we screwed up! Killed me that did :(

Best - Andy King
Worst - McAllister. It wasn't a foul. Alexanderrson (I think it was) got a touch on the ball first. Plus it was 3 minutes 40 seconds into 3 minutes injury time, but of course they let them take the free kick - despite having blown 15 seconds early the season before when the ball was going into the net off Don Hutchinson's arse. couldn't have us doing the league double could they?
Paranoid?!
Me??!!!
