I still can't believe England employ Mark Ramprakash as batting coach. How the hell did he get the gig??

Having saw pretty much the whole of his Test career, I can safety say he was the biggest failure of all the English batsmen of his generation, even bigger than Graeme Hick, and that took some doing.

A pathetic Test batting average of just over 27 and now he's telling our best batsmen what they should be doing. God help us.

He was an excellent technician, as you say failed as a test player, but that doesnt make him a poor coach, unsworth was a pretty crap footballer, yet has a reputation as a progressive coach

I'm sure he once averaged over a ton in a county season ?

His record against mediocre county attacks was always excellent. His record at the very top level was utterly atrocious. And he had chance after chance after chance.

Surely England could have acquired someone with a better pedigree than this guy?

And our totals while batting have hardly improved since he was hired.

They're all suffering the same issues Ramprakash had; loss of concentration, poor shot selection, no bottle. Great coaching that.

Having no bottle was Ramprakash's biggest failing. He simply melted when put under far more pressure at Test level. I certainly wouldn't have him coaching our batsmen, surely there's better qualified out there to do the job?

Michael Vaughn is the obvious candidate for me, or Michael Atherton, but neither would be interested I'm sure, media careers doing far too well and no pressure on them from the com box.

Always puzzled me a little bit having all these coaches at international level. You've picked a guy because he's the best player in the country in that position. Surely that means he actually doesn't need any technical coaching, or else you wouldn't have picked him. That's a job for his county coach at the very most. The position should almost be mentor like. Someone who's been there, done that, scored hundreds, has the bottle.

I think Vaughan would be wasted as a batting coach, his mind should be put to a position where he can manage the whole squads affairs and greater preparation, he did apply for the directors position, but unfortunately strauss being a public school tory, he obviously got the job

Fair point, he should be overseeing the entire bloody show.

They need to spend as much money as possible on getting Shane Bond as their bowling coach too, he turned a bunch of medium pacers in NZ into genuine quicks, Bolt and Southee are one of the best duos going thanks to his work.

Bad news, Vaughan is a massive Tory as well. I was gutted when I found out.

He may be a bit old now but I honestly believe Geoff Boycott should have had the job at some point. I'm not sure there's many Englishmen with the knowledge about batting that he has.

And to be honest, he still has a very sharp cricket brain and a passion to see England do well, hence how gutted he was during the post game analysis after we were thrashed in Sydney.

I recall reading the autobiographies of Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussian and they both had coaching sessions with him when they were young players at the start of their Test careers and both said they were invaluable to their development as batsmen. Graham Gooch has also said he went to him for coaching even when he was approaching the veteran stage of his career.

But I reckon Boycott's bluntness and his occasional ability to rub people up the wrong way has possibly cost him a role in the England set-up since he retired, but even at his age, I'd sooner him coach our batsmen than Ramprakash.

Loved shane bond as a player, only injuries stopped him becoming a great
