The Ashes 2017/18

I managed to get into the members area on Friday of Sydney test. Saw the players in the nets warming up and the players on the balcony. The Aussie who got me in I met in the Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast in October, when I went back to see the Northern Ireland Germany match. He was looking around the pub and as I had done a bit of research on the pub I told him a few things. As we got talking he asked if I had ever been to Australia and I said I was going over for the Boxing day Ashes test in Melbourne. I had wanted to go for 40 years or so and finally was going. I got a ticket for Boxing day in the general area for $30 AUD. But when I tried to get one for the Thursday and Friday for the Sydney test it was coming up as $150 AUD. I told him this and and said I wouldn't pay that much. He said, don't worry I am a member of Sydney cricket club and will get you in for nothing on the Friday. He gave me his number and said to ring when I get to Sydney.

My wife and kids kept saying he was probably drunk and wouldn't remember the conversation and I wouldn't get in to the ground never mind the members area. They kept saying text him or ring but the arrangement was to phone when I got to Sydney. I arrived in Sydney from Brisbane on Tuesday 2nd January and gave him a bell. He said that Thursday was out but to give him a ring on Thursday at the close of play, which I did and we arranged to meet at Gate A by the members entrance at 9.00am. At 9 O'clock he came along and gave me a members card to get in. He took me on a tour of the members area and I saw Moeen Alli warming up in the nets. Saw the changing rooms from the outside and the balcony. I couldn't believe my luck and he kept saying that I was the 'luckiest Irishman'. Mind, I met about 10 of his mates and they bet him a pint each that I wouldn't turn up. The ale was on him as he cashed in his bet. Unfortunately, I had to leave at 3.00 pm to catch my plane to Beijing and onward to Heathrow. I was in the air for the cup game and got into Beijing airport and onto the internet at 10.00 pm. to see the result. That was the only downside of what was a fantastic day, which added to the experience of watching cricket on Boxing day in Melbourne.

As far as the cricket went England are second rate at the moment and even though it is difficult to win in Australia they were not really in with a shout. According to a lot of the Aussies I talked to they said Australia are not that good. England have a lot of work to do before the next Ashes series.

He blocked every ball that was thrown at him, but he did get his feet mixed up a bit and nearly fell over.
I note that he now holds an Ashes record: no player in any prior series has ever been dismissed as many times, by the same bowler. Lyons nabbed him SEVEN times lol

strauss's pet bayliss quitting after 2019, he did massively turn around the limited overs side and improve us after the diabolical peter moores somehow got a second chance, i still think it was a massive waste not to give vaughan the directors job, still, didn't go to the right school i guess
