If you were a yank plod tonight and got a call to a black neighbourhood would you ignore it? Say your car was playing up or something? Because I can see that happening.

Robots with bombs. Christ. Jumped quickly from Grand Theft Auto to Fallout there.
Turns out that Johnny 5 is not only alive but a grand wizard of the Klan

From the excellent Washington Post article on Dallas PD's community-focused tactics (thanks to @SerenityNigh for sharing), the following stood out for me:
There are far too many other factors that contribute to the crime rate to specifically or exclusive credit this sort of policing for the increase in safety in the cities that have tried it. But if we can get the same or better public safety results by training police officers to deescalate, to use the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve a confrontation, to engage with the community and to opt for conflict resolution over violence . . . why wouldn’t we?

There are so many factors at play in US society: institutional racism, inequality of opportunity, ridiculously lax gun laws, a WildWest /shoot-em up mentality, poorly vetted and trained police forces, over-powerful police unions (aka the thin blue line) and fear, fear, fear among them.

It's an absolute tragedy that one of the most progressive and effective Police Departments in the country have lost 5 of its officers in a revenge attack against the institution. But it doesn't surprise me that the attack took place - it was only a matter of time. If other PD's use this as a raisin-d'etre for ramping up their confrontational approaches to citizens then many more innocents will die.

What strikes me when watching these type of 'police brutality' videos is how often the police officers involved completely lose their cool, escalate the situation, yell contradictory orders, deploy unnecessary force, and treat the slain with a complete lack of humanity. By that I mean failing to render or summon medical help when someone is gasping for breath/bleeding out/dying, cuffing them when dead, leaving their bodies lying in the street, targeting shocked passengers or bystanders with threats, handcuffs or guns drawn, and just generally being out of control of themselves and the situation.

De-escalation is the key, not going in (literally) all guns blazing.

Nobody has done anything of the sort though. People understand BlackLivesMatter is a movement that is dealing with a perceived issue, no matter how misguided it is. People also understand Obama has zero to do with it, and indeed would have gone a long way to stopping this if the NRA and Republicans weren't utter tossers.
