Where to even begin with that? Rolling around on the ground screaming he’d been hit even though he clearly hadn’t? The kids in the background seeming to go about their business as he barricaded himself behind a car? But easily the best part was him laying on his side popping off a full clip into the vehicle like McLovin at the end of Superbad.

These are just excerpts from the report...it really is a slapstick comedy, Reno 911 style.

I don’t really think his actions are particularly defensible even he had actually been shot at. He thinks his car has been struck by a bullet, so his instinct is to fire nearly twenty shots back into the car, which also happens to be in the same direction as a dozen residential homes? Unless they had someone in custody in the back seat of the vehicle and thought the shots were coming from inside, nothing about his reaction makes any sense.

Defo, it's a mad response. But I think it serves to highlight some of the broader issues with US law enforcement. Poor recruitment and training, combined with the genuine potential life or death risk factor (far more than police in most other Western countries have to consider) lead to this sort of insanity. There's obviously a lot of well documented cases of police violence in black communities, but I suspect many of them are committed by frightened, untrained officers at the edge of their nerves like this guy, as opposed to them being always racially motivated.

His partner, at the other end of the street, hears the response of shots fired and being hit and empties her magazine into the car too.

Honestly, if that happened over here in the police they'd be gone and facing charges; in the military, you'd be in the glasshouse.

This is the untold story and undercurrent of what systemic racism over the years has manifested. It's that, just coming into the situation, officers are expecting something to happen. So they are already on edge and not thinking clearly.

In the time I've spent in the UK, I've seen precious few police even carrying firearms, and the ones that do are usually stationed outside of places where you can safely bet there are important government officials and the like. I didn't think the normal officers walking the street even had them.

As others have pointed out, just like so many things, a lot of this incident can be traced back to the gun problem in this country. In a country where there are more firearms than people, police are perfectly reasonable to go into situations fearing trouble.

Very few officers carry firearms, and that's because the vast majority neither want nor need to; the public do not expect or desire it either.

Last year, in a population of 67 million, there was slightly over 6,000 armed officers in total; if you consider there's 150,697 officers, that's 3.9%.

If you go back to the early 90s, police officers here in England had to keep weapons concealed when leaving the building and out, unless they need to be drawn.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the whole culture within America of owning firearms and the love for them is toxic.

Seems they targetted children

Eleven children are in hospital following the rally, nine with gunshot wounds, Children's Mercy, a Kansas City hospital, said in a statement.

"Those victims brought here from the Union Station incident are being treated by the best trauma specialists in the city," the hospital said.

No ages of the victims were provided.

The police chief had said earlier that no children had been injured in the shooting.

How about this gem making the rounds today. I found articles like this on various real websites from a year ago.

By all accounts the KC shooters were minors

Missouri state lawmakers voted down a proposal on Wednesday to ban children from carrying guns in public.
The amendment to a public safety bill, brought to the floor by Democratic state Rep. Donna Baringer from St. Louis, was defeated 104-39.

The provision was originally part of House Bill 301, a public safety bill developed by a bipartisan working group on crime. Baringer served as a member of the working group.

However, when the legislation came before the larger Crime Prevention and Public Safety Committee, the provision barring children from publicly carrying guns was removed.
