I work in a hospital in Manhattan. The other day a Jewish colleague was saying she’s going to get a gun because she feels scared. Others chimed in agreeing, saying they either already owned them or were planning to buy. One of them said that when she’d fired a gun previously, it made her feel powerful. These are otherwise intelligent people. They mostly live in the suburbs. Very depressing.

Sounds like they have identified the guy and he has a military background and has firearms expertise. Counting down to the moment we get told he has mental health issues, thoughts and prayers for the victims and that now is not the time to talk about gun control.

I might get called out for that but the time for these conversations are when they atrocities happen. It's never too soon to talk about this, the time is now.

CNN had a local council member on earlier. He spoke very well in general but said when he heard about the shooting he got his guns. Not the way to protect yourself and a sign of the problem the US has when it comes to guns.

I also would like to clarify I am not downplaying mental health issues. Merely stating that pro-gun people use it as a reason for blame in these situations. Rather than dealing with the two big issues there. Lack of support for people with mental heath issues and easy access to guns.
One strategy that the right in this country employs toward the end of minimizing government spending is refusing to provide support for mental health issues. Providing that support puts the government on the hook for additional Medicaid and Medicare costs, and the right doesn't want that.

The single least-cost solution to minimizing the societal costs (externalities) associated with refusing to provide that support is to deny easy access to guns.

It isn't any more complicated than this. We can have nice things, or we can cut government spending. Pick one.

Of all the people you would want to deny access to a gun, at least for a period of time, the alleged shooter would be very high on the list given his training and expressed desires.
The state does not have an Extreme Risk law, also known as a “red flag” law, to empower families and law enforcement to prevent tragedies before they happen. And in 2015, the state repealed one of the few gun safety laws it had, allowing people to carry hidden, loaded guns throughout the state without a permit. To become a safer state, Maine should require background checks and enact an Extreme Risk law, also known as a red flag law, to empower families and law enforcement to prevent firearm suicides.

Maddening. Can only hope that he shot all right wing NRA supporting nuts, but we know that probably isn't going to be the case and innocents who deserve to be protected by law and their government have been injured or killed.

America is returning to its wild west roots and all tourists just need to stay away from the country. Perhaps that might then be enough to force a policy change.
