2018/2019 stats - A few that stand out...
-There are 160k firearm licenses, and £572k shotgun licenses.
-For new firearms/shotgun applications, only 2/3% were refused.
-Most license holders are male, 97% for firearms, 94% for shotguns.
-Youngest person with a shotgun license is eight years old.
-Almost 1500 licenses were revoked in 2019.
-Most licenses are held in rural areas, with the fewest held in large, urban areas.
There is always room for improvements of course, but I think we have got the balance just about right. In the UK, mass/spree gun killings are rare. Hungerford in 1987, Dunblane in 1996, Cumbria in 2010, and Plymouth 2021. For perspective, there have been 425 mass shootings in the USA so far this year.
