I know I’ve been critical of the backwardness of the US gun culture that has resulted in the deaths of more than 1.6 million people (more than four times the population of Liverpool) via firearms in the last 50 years, but credit where credit is due it’s good to see sensible measures being taken to address things.

US school rebuilt with bulletproof barriers and curved corridors

“Fruitport High School in Michigan became the first school in America to be rebuilt with concrete barriers in hallways for students to hide from bullets. The hallways are also curved to prevent a shooter from having a clear line of sight during any potential attack. Classrooms have also been redesigned so students can hide more easily.”

Costing a mere $48 million to rebuild (an absolute bargain I’m sure we’d all agree), Bob Szymoniak, Fruitport High School's superintendent, states the finished school (with state of the art curved corridors and bulletproof barriers for kids) will be “magnificent”, and will become part of the structure of all schools in America, stating, “These are design elements that are naturally part of buildings going into the future."

You couldn’t make it up.

To quote Steven Weinberg, “for good people to do evil things, that takes religion”

The same applies to gun zealots. They see kids getting blown to pieces at Sandy Hook, and it doesn’t enrage them to call for change. In fact, they defend the nutters right to have a gun. Rational thinking is impossible for warped minds.

How you get people out of cult like thinking is the biggest dilemma. You can’t reason with someone in that state.

I probably shouldn't be surprised, being politically inclined as a centrist, but economically I tend to think market demand drives transactions. In this case Colt has made a choice opposed to immediate demand, and what I hope is a good choice also. (Of course, being a centrist I shouldn't be surprised that good supply choices also helps steer markets, since I believe good governance can help steer markets, but yano.) Ok, /nerd.

This is an crazy read about where we are as a "modern civilized" country; but the descriptions of the active-shooter "drills" are particularly bizarre.

Hi Carlos mate

This is an crazy read about where we are as a "modern civilized" country; but the descriptions of the active-shooter "drills" are particularly bizarre.

At 10:21 a.m. on December 6, Lake Brantley High School, in Florida, initiated a ‘code red’ lockdown. ‘This is not a drill,’ a voice announced over the PA system. At the same moment, teachers received a text message warning of an active shooter on campus. Fearful students took shelter in classrooms. Many sobbed hysterically, others vomited or fainted, and some sent farewell notes to parents. A later announcement prompted a stampede in the cafeteria, as students fled the building and jumped over fences to escape. Parents flooded 911 with frantic calls. Later it was revealed, to the fury of parents, teachers, and students, that in fact, this was a drill, the most realistic in a series of drills that the students of Lake Brantley, like students across the country, have lately endured.”

When schools don’t tell students that drills are just drills, it can be positively terrorizing to students. One doesn’t have to look far to find examples of “good-bye” texts hastily written by students to their parents during these drills. Most are simply too heart-breaking to quote in this post.

NBC News has reported that: “Over the past two decades, the drills have ramped up in intensity — with some schools going so far as to use fake blood and fire blanks at students. A drill last month at an Indiana school prompted outrage when teachers were shot execution-style with pellet guns, leaving them injured.”

Wait, WHAT?

I know! Completely insane.

The things these guys get away with. I used to be a member. I joined many years ago when I first joined the Marine Corps. Few other guys had joined so I decided too. After a few years i left because all they do is harass you.

They call you constantly, email you way too much and good luck if they somehow find out you serve.

They automatically assume you support everything they do if they know you serve and more letters and calls.

They have been known to trick people into joining who are looking to use gun clubs. The reason is that said gun club needs insurance and sometimes the NRA are their only option. So they do a deal with the club if they coax people into joining they will get a better rate.

That you tube channel and the brief tv thing they did are nothing short of embarrassing
