History is going to judge this period in american history harshly...

Wish I shared your confidence in future Americans...

Read up on Iran-Contra. Then reflect that Obama praised Reagan every chance he could get, and that only that silly musical has kept him from staining the $10 bill.

Or the fact that George W. Bush's popularity has never been higher - 60% approval now, apparently.

American liberals effectively have no memory. They are so dull and credulous that they get weepy-eyed even over ogres like John McCain.

Today's sharers of "The bad orange man did another stupid" twitter memes will tomorrow be posting sentences that start with "Well, at least Donald Trump never_____"; "Say what you will about Trump, but ________________"; or "Even Donald Trump wouldn't have __________________", after the backlash against the hilariously disastrous 4-year Biden Presidency brings a dead-eyed but actually competent fascist like Tom Cotton to power.

In any case, there isn't going to be any American history in a few decades, if current trends continue: https://www.thedailybeast.com/histo...-a-thing-of-the-past-except-in-the-ivy-league

crikey...i'm going to try and remain vaguely optimistic!

Just watched the footage of the two police Chasing a fella in a white pick up truck and shooting through their own windscreen at him.

Incredible to see that.

Aftermath:
Officer still on force.
District Attorney determined shooting was *justified.*
Family cant afford medical bills including a $1300 ambulance ride!
Child missed 3 weeks of 8th grade.

The only message sent by system: Dont be black, in a backyard, & play w/ a BB gun.

Not really helpful to mention skin colour. In 0.6 seconds, the officer didn’t have time to assess anything. He didn’t decide to shoot him because he was black. I doubt that he had time to tell who he was shooting at. He was responding to a ‘burglar on site’, so not the officers fault that he was given the wrong information.

Was it a BB gun? It could have been. It could also have been a .22 pistol. This tweet is light on facts, yet full of emotive language. And police officers don’t have to identify themselves or give a warning if in doing so, creates a delay that could lead to an immediate loss of life. It only takes a split second to shoot.

This is just another sad story from the U.S. Given the low number of firearms in the UK, our armed police can perhaps err on the side of caution. U.S. Police don’t have that luxury.

Sad story all round, but good to hear that the lad will be okay. Quite frankly, the most shocking part of this story is the shameful fee for calling an ambulance!

But that is a problem all by itself!

The officer said himself that he believed it to be a cap gun, yet made no attempt to confirm/deny that was the case. He also made no attempt to identify what the kids were shooting at which nullifies the "don't have to identify themselves or give a warning that could lead to an immediate loss of life". A mere report of a burglary should not result in officers coming in guns blazing without making any attempt at threat assessment or de-escalation.

No. The officer said 'I think it's a cap gun'. He didn't say 'It's a cap gun'. There is a huge difference.

How long should he have investigated for? It's not the response officers role to investigate. He is there for an immediate response. It's for others to investigate after things have calmed down and the danger has passed.

Again, don't judge this by the relatively low threat of gun crime in the UK. The gun threat across the pond is very different.

Are you real?

Are you real?

I get what he's saying though. Imagine having that job - everyone you're enforcing the law with has the potential to murder you in a split second.

Is it any surprise they go into self-preservation mode in those circumstances? For all we know, the kid has spun round and pointed the gun in his direction, hence the response.

They have tasers and night sticks. Not forgetting pepper spray.

They are highly trained in the use of all of their equipment. Much more than most of the people they shoot.

The officer could have done more. In fact they are trained to do more but most of them seem to forget that and use their guns first.

As i have said before a friend of mine was shot by a cop here. Both he and the officer served in the military. His family asked for answers as to why it could not have been solved with less lethal force given the circumstances because quite frankly the story on the report stunk. There was an officer with a taser yet the other two shot him. This was before body cams too.

Thing is sure its a tough job and really stressful but treating everyone like they are going to shoot you is stupid. Considering the protection and weapons plus the training they get.

When you allow someone to shoot because they feared for their life and also allow justifiable homicide which seemingly only ever applies to cops this sort of thing will continue to happen.
