I agree with you to an extent, but the issue around demographic politics in the US is not one that Trump invented (though he did capitalize on it) and a Charlottesville style reaction was always going to be one of the (early) consequences of a society and a politics that is so racially divided. Nor is there any indication that anything is likely to change, especially when much of the US left and the media are so obsessed with the nonsense of identity politics that it is pushed down the throats of everyone involved on almost an hourly basis.
White nationalism is by definition identity politics. The right wing in this country played identity politics entire election cycle by demonizing Muslims/Mexicans. I hate it when people criticize the left for only focussing on identity politics when the right focusses on it just as much or more.

You expect it from the right though - to play divide and rule, and to stir up hatred. It is disgusting, it is incredibly corrosive in terms of what it does to society and dangerous but that is how they've stayed in power.
The left on the other hand has every reason not to do it and yet here they are, signing up to something that can only ever result in disaster. They are meant to be better than this.

Sigh of resignation. God forbid a measly amount of tax dollars goes to study something that is killing our citizens at a rate of about 25,000+ per year.

House Republican appropriators Wednesday rejected a proposal to designate millions of dollars for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for gun violence research, voting 32-20 to keep the language out of a fiscal 2019 spending bill.
The party-line vote marked Democrats’ latest failed bid to spur studies into preventing firearm-related injuries and deaths — and comes despite a bipartisan agreement earlier this year that the CDC is permitted to conduct such research. The agency's ability to study gun violence had been limited by a 1996 provision that prevented the CDC from collecting data to advocate for gun control.

A rare event occurred on Capitol Hill at the end of 2013: Republicans and Democrats agreed on a sensible, if modest, measure to continue regulating guns made from plastic. Now the Trump administration seems to be taking aim at even that.
The Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988, first signed into law by Ronald Reagan and extended in 1998 by Bill Clinton, and again in 2003 by George W. Bush, was expiring. The law answered a fear that terrorists could smuggle weapons with lightweight polymer components through metal detectors by banning the manufacture, possession and transport of these weapons.
In 1988, plastic guns were science fiction. In 2013, they were reality.
